New Trailer for ‘The Greatest’ Reveals Muhammad Ali’s Biopic Release Date
Few figures in sports history have been dramatized as frequently as Muhammad Ali, yet his narrative still seems to have more to unveil. With the release of a new trailer for the Muhammad Ali biopic series, Prime Video is asserting that a full television season can encapsulate what a 2-hour film could not.
Ali has been the focus of numerous documentaries and films, most notably Michael Mann’s 2001 biopic ‘Ali’, which received the champion’s approval. However, those projects were independent Hollywood interpretations rather than collaborations with his family. This new project aims to bridge that gap.
The series is titled ‘The Greatest’, and the trailer begins with an intense close-up of the fighter’s eyes, gradually unfolding the story of Cassius Clay’s ascent. This is the first authorized scripted series about Ali’s life, executive produced by Michael B. Jordan, set to premiere on Prime Video on November 4.

What distinguishes this series is the involvement of Ali’s widow, Lonnie Ali, who serves as an executive producer. This makes it the first scripted television adaptation developed in full cooperation with his estate. The creators describe it as an intimate exploration of a man who was a husband, father, brother, and son, rather than just a conventional sports biography.
The 8-episode limited series was created by Ben Watkins, known for the Prime Video hit ‘Cross’, who also serves as showrunner and directs the initial episodes. Jordan is producing through his company Outlier Society, alongside Roc Nation, Authentic Studios, Polygram Entertainment, and Grace: A Storytelling Company. Prime Video has announced that all episodes will premiere on November 4 in over 240 countries and territories.
Jaalen Best stars as Cassius Clay and Muhammad Ali, marking a significant milestone for the actor, who is recognized for ‘All American: Homecoming’ and ‘Magnum P.I.’. An earlier teaser highlighted his physical transformation, showcasing training montages as Ali aims to become the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history.
The cast is impressive, featuring Michael Ealy as Malcolm X, Amin Joseph as rival Sonny Liston, and Giovanni Ribisi as legendary trainer Angelo Dundee. Omari Hardwick and Dana Gourrier portray Ali’s parents, while Kai Parham plays his younger brother, with Erica Tazel, Reno Wilson, Aleks Paunovic, and Dave Davis also in the lineup.
The series was greenlit by Prime Video in July 2024, with production commencing in May 2025. Filming took place across Ontario, including Toronto, Cobourg, and Hamilton, capturing pivotal moments throughout Ali’s career and personal life. The release date and initial teaser were revealed at the Essence Festival of Culture, with Watkins, Best, and several cast members present.
The long-form format may be its greatest strength. An 8-episode structure allows for a deeper exploration of Ali’s private life, including a coming-of-age chapter that reveals a different side of the fighter during his Cassius Clay years. It also provides the opportunity to examine the battles he faced outside the ring alongside the fights that made him a legend.
Streaming has become a haven for prestigious biopics, and a series with the family’s endorsement carries significant weight. Jordan, an Oscar winner with his own boxing credentials from ‘Creed’, brings both star power and a connection to the sport to this project. If the trailer is any indication, the series aims for emotional depth as well as athletic spectacle.
Fans will soon discover if it lives up to its name. The countdown to November 4 is officially on.
