‘Lanterns’ Renewal Depends on One Key Factor, Says DC’s Peter Safran
The renewal status of ‘Lanterns’ has been a topic of speculation since HBO’s DC drama concluded its 8-episode run on October 4. Typically, a hit like this would receive a swift confirmation, yet fans are still awaiting official news about its future.
The series debuted on August 16, boasting a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 32 early reviews. Much of the acclaim was directed towards Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart, whose dynamic buddy-cop chemistry anchored a True Detective-style narrative. Viewership steadily increased throughout the season, with the premiere attracting 9.3 million global viewers and the finale reaching 10.5 million, including 7.2 million in the U.S.
Recently, DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran shared insights regarding the show’s potential for a second season. During an interview with Collider at the Clayface premiere, he indicated that a decision should be made before the end of 2026, emphasizing that the renewal hinges on whether the writers’ room can create a “worthy successor to a beloved and great first season.” When asked if this was the crucial factor, he confirmed it was.
When IGN inquired about the show’s greenlight status, Safran’s response was a definitive no. Reports suggest that the writers have been working without a formal pickup since August, effectively challenging them to earn the renewal.
Showrunner Chris Mundy has been assembling the writers’ room for months. Notable writers include Christopher Cantwell, Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, and Vanessa Baden Kelly, with Baden Kelly being the only returning writer from season 1 besides Mundy.
Mundy mentioned that he was about six weeks into planning a new season, while reiterating that nothing is finalized. Co-creator Damon Lindelof is not expected to return, but he noted that the writers are brainstorming, with the first season designed as a self-contained mystery. This adds pressure to the team to develop a new storyline rather than extend the existing one.

On paper, the case for renewal appears strong. The show averaged 19.3 million global viewers per episode, ranking it among the top five HBO series launches in the platform’s history. According to Variety, episode 7 garnered 7 million U.S. viewers within its first three days.
The finale, titled “Dirt and Stars,” resolved the central mystery of Hal Jordan’s murder and unveiled the identity of the second Manhunter. It also depicted how John Stewart becomes Earth’s sole Green Lantern ahead of his appearance in ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ scheduled for summer 2027. With Chandler’s Hal having died, a second season would need to navigate around that plot point, though anything is possible in this universe.
Safran remarked that the most gratifying aspect of the show’s success has been reviving interest in Green Lantern, a property that suffered due to the poorly received 2011 film. This context explains why DC is proceeding cautiously with a potential follow-up.

Reactions among fans have been mixed. While some view the “worthy successor” requirement as a potential red flag, others are simply encouraging the writers to deliver. The finale itself received a range of responses, even as it set impressive ratings records, and James Gunn has been noncommittal about labeling it a season finale versus a series finale.
For the time being, ‘Lanterns’ remains in a state of uncertainty, with a decision expected before the year’s end.
