Intelligence has bid farewell to numerous familiar faces over the years, but few exits have felt as personal as the one in this ‘Chicago P.D.’ recap. The latest episode, “Don’t Blink,” aired on October 14 and placed one of the show’s longest-serving characters at a pivotal crossroads. Directed by Jesse Lee Soffer, who portrayed Jay Halstead for a decade before stepping behind the camera, this episode holds significant weight.

The season 14 premiere concluded with Kevin Atwater hurrying to the hospital as his girlfriend, Tasha Fox, was about to give birth. This cliffhanger set the stage for the new hour, which opens with the couple welcoming their newborn son, Malcolm. It quickly becomes evident that the episode explores how a new baby shifts a cop’s priorities.

In fact, “Don’t Blink” marks LaRoyce Hawkins’ final episode as Atwater, a character who has been part of the series since its inception in 2014. He voluntarily leaves the unit to accept a teaching position at a police academy in Atlanta, aiming to build a life with Tasha and their son. Showrunner Gwen Sigan mentioned that the writers wanted to provide him with a fitting sendoff, and the episode unfolds on his own terms rather than through tragedy.

Upon returning from leave, Atwater receives a warm welcome from the team. Tasha encourages him to speak with Voight, and Atwater brings up his stalled promotion. Voight makes it clear that there isn’t much he can do, which stings for a man eager to provide for his family.

A new robbery pulls the unit back into action before the conversation can progress. At the scene, Atwater discovers a woman’s body in a freezer on the lower level. The building’s manager died while attempting to escape, escalating the situation from robbery to murder.

A video recorded by the victim gives the team a breakthrough, and Torres notices construction-related clothing that leads them to a young worker named Brennan. His alibi checks out, but the investigation soon shifts focus to his father, Peter. While canvassing, Atwater stumbles upon another robbery in progress at an arcade, where one of the masked men returns to help free a trapped victim before fleeing.

Atwater receives a call from Tasha while speaking with Peter at the front desk. She’s at the hospital with the baby, who has developed an ear infection requiring antibiotics. Burgess understands the struggle between work and home, and a nurse’s remark about the resemblance between father and baby prompts Atwater to return to the case with a fresh perspective on Peter and his son.

The unit shifts focus to Peter, and the pursuit of his accomplice turns perilous. Atwater is hit by a bullet, but his vest saves him. For a farewell episode, the shooting introduces anxiety, but its true impact emerges afterward as Atwater reflects on how close he came to leaving his newborn without a father.

Initially, Peter refuses to name his partner, but Atwater appeals to him as a father. Peter reveals that his son stole from a dealer and faced violent consequences unless the debt was repaid. The robberies were his son’s attempts to gather the money, aided by a man named Steve.

Unfortunately, it’s too late. Blood and signs of a struggle at his home lead the team to Brennan’s body at a dump site, forcing Atwater to inform Peter that his son is dead. Peter’s regret centers on not being there for his child, mirroring the fears that have been building in Atwater throughout the day.

With Sergeant Nolan nearing retirement, a promotion becomes a possibility for Atwater. However, he realizes that rank alone won’t provide the family life he desires. Voight, recalling his own early years with his son, understands. An opportunity to teach at a police academy in Atlanta offers good pay and more flexibility, leading Atwater to discuss the move with Tasha before they both agree.

The episode concludes with a heartfelt farewell for the 21st District. Ruzek leads a toast, and Platt ensures Atwater gets to address the friends who have become his family, culminating in the group singing “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” In his speech, Hawkins’ character expresses gratitude to the district for being his home for 14 years.

Atwater survives, and the show refrains from using his exit as a catalyst for another tragedy. Critics have noted that the episode provides him with a happy ending alongside the family he’s always wanted, with Voight’s blessing. Reviewers also pointed out that while the robbery case itself is more functional than surprising, the farewell remains the true highlight.

The next episode, “Under the Surface,” is set to air on October 21 at 10/9c on NBC.
