Ian McKellen Returns as Magneto in New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Promo
Ian McKellen has been embodying Magneto’s gravitas since the 2000 film ‘X-Men’, where he first shared the screen with Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and James Marsden’s Cyclops. Few comic book portrayals have aged as gracefully, and fans have long wished for one more opportunity to see him don the iconic helmet. That wish is finally coming to fruition.
McKellen is reprising his role as Magneto in Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. This film unites the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Wakandans, featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. One teaser even concluded with a simple line confirming the return of the X-Men.
Recently, a striking new piece of promotional artwork has emerged. Credited to HEXFacility, the image depicts McKellen’s Magneto standing with his arms outstretched in a crimson costume, a gray cape billowing around him, and purple lightning crackling in the background. It’s a dramatic pose reminiscent of classic comic book covers.

The costume prominently features red, complete with a high-collared tunic, matching pants, tall black boots, and the signature helmet. A belt with an X-shaped buckle sits at the waist, clearly indicating the mutant’s allegiance. Wavy gray hair spills out from beneath the helmet.
These details align with the first official look at the character. Marvel Studios revealed the costume through a Hot Toys collectible, showcasing a design that incorporates more red than any of McKellen’s previous Magneto appearances. The figure also includes a helmet sculpt and a detailed portrait of the actor.
It’s important to maintain perspective. The HEXFacility artwork is part of a larger collection of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ posters, with at least 25 circulating online. Many of these are comic-style illustrations, and reports indicate that such art may not accurately reflect the characters’ final on-screen designs.
Some pieces mimic the style of vintage comic covers, complete with a corner box featuring the Marvel Studios logo and an emblem that combines the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men symbols. Others focus on Doctor Doom or showcase the Doombots, his mechanical doubles. Thus, while the Magneto piece offers an exciting preview, it may not represent a final frame.
McKellen has also hinted at how Magneto will be portrayed. He mentioned a major sequence where he destroys New Jersey and described filming a scene where he stood in the wind, attempting to look furious. His comments suggest that the character will have a significant, destructive moment in the film.
This aligns with Magneto’s history as a figure of power and conviction, someone who can be both frightening and sympathetic. A film centered around multiversal stakes seems like the ideal platform for him.

McKellen is not alone in this venture. Stewart returns as Professor X, Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and Kelsey Grammer as Beast. Channing Tatum is also set to appear as Gambit.
This legacy lineup is a significant draw. Marvel’s trailers have only provided brief glimpses of McKellen’s Magneto and Stewart’s Xavier, so each new piece of art ignites speculation. San Diego Comic-Con 2026 showcased a trailer focused on Doom, but the X-Men have mostly remained in the shadows.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, with its follow-up, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, scheduled for December 17, 2027. The Russos have also indicated that Marvel has yet to reveal its full cast, ensuring that surprises are still in store.
For longtime fans, witnessing McKellen back in the cape is a nostalgic thrill. If the final film lives up to the promise of this artwork, Magneto could emerge as one of the standout moments of the entire event.
