Martin Freeman has long maintained a low profile when it comes to his personal life, despite being a prominent figure in the entertainment industry. The actor, known for his roles as Tim in ‘The Office’, Dr. John Watson in ‘Sherlock’, and Bilbo Baggins in ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy, rarely appears with a partner on the red carpet and seldom discusses his home life during interviews.

This made a recent outing in London particularly surprising. Freeman and his partner of six years, French writer-actress Rachel Benaissa, were spotted together at the BFI London Film Festival, where they caught the attention of photographers.

Freeman, 55, and Benaissa, 34, attended the gala screening of ‘A Long Winter’ at the Royal Festival Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Freeman was there to promote the new Andrew Haigh drama alongside co-stars Fred Hechinger and Caitríona Balfe. He sported a gold band on his ring finger, while Benaissa showcased a stunning emerald engagement ring flanked by two diamonds, paired with a gold wedding band.

The sight of their rings sparked immediate speculation. A spokesperson for Freeman later confirmed to The Sun that the couple had tied the knot, with reports indicating that the wedding occurred privately earlier this year. Details about the ceremony remain undisclosed.

The couple first met in 2020, and their relationship became public the following year. They have kept their romance largely under wraps, making only a few red-carpet appearances, including the 2025 Olivier Awards at the Royal Albert Hall.

Benaissa hails from Toulouse, France, and is currently based in London. She is an actress, writer, and producer, and has also been credited as Rachel Mariam. Her screen credits include a minor role in the BBC drama ‘Normal People’, a part in Aisling Bea’s Channel 4 comedy ‘This Way Up’, and a role in the Netflix film ‘Irish Wish’ alongside Lindsay Lohan.

In addition to her acting, she has written for several short films and the TV movie ‘Dare to Say Yes’. Currently, she is working on a short film titled ‘A Tiny Thing’. Her creative pursuits align with Freeman’s, as the two reportedly share a passion for film.

Freeman has provided only rare glimpses into their life together. On Jessie Ware’s food podcast ‘Table Manners’, he humorously mentioned Benaissa’s fondness for cheese and wine, revealing that cooking together is one of their favorite activities. This offered a lighthearted insight into a relationship that has largely remained private.

Previously, Freeman was in a long-term relationship with actress Amanda Abbington from 2000 to 2016, and they share two children, Joe and Grace. In January, Freeman brought Joe along with Benaissa to the UK premiere of ‘Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials’, providing fans with a rare look at their family dynamic. Observers noted how comfortable the trio appeared together.

This moment aligns with the couple’s pattern of keeping their relationship out of the spotlight, with only occasional appearances at events related to Freeman’s work. It also explains why their recent festival outing garnered so much attention. Spotting them together at a significant gala, with their rings on display, transformed a quiet announcement into a major celebrity news story.

The 70th BFI London Film Festival, which runs from Oct. 7 to 18, showcases 251 titles from 88 countries. For a couple deeply involved in film, it was an appropriate backdrop for a rare public appearance. Freeman’s film, ‘A Long Winter’, is among the festival’s gala presentations, alongside new works from directors like Danny Boyle and Martin McDonagh.

Neither Freeman nor Benaissa has issued a public statement beyond the confirmation of their marriage, and no wedding photos have surfaced. For now, the rings seen on the red carpet serve as the only visual evidence of their nuptials.
