Jenna Ortega has crafted a striking red carpet persona over the past few years, often leaning into dark and dramatic aesthetics. Known for her gothic roles in ‘Wednesday’, ‘Scream’, and ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’, her signature style is characterized by corsetry, shadows, and moody details. Therefore, any shift from this norm is bound to attract attention. At the premiere of her new film, Jenna Ortega’s golden slip dress infused a refreshing burst of sunshine into the festival circuit.

The premiere took place at the BFI London Film Festival, and the contrast with her usual style was intentional. Opting for gold instead of her typical black, fans were quick to notice the change.

For the ‘Klara and the Sun‘ gala on Thursday, October 15, Ortega donned a floor-length golden silk dress from Torlowei that resembled a slip. The dress featured a deep neckline, delicate thin straps, and black lace detailing across the bodice, with floral embellishments cascading down the skirt. The back-baring silhouette created striking visuals against the festival’s teal backdrop.

She completed the look with a delicate yellow lace cap, a softer accessory compared to her viral veil from the ‘Wednesday’ premiere a few years back. Her dark hair flowed in loose waves, complemented by defined eye makeup and a natural lip. The combination of gold, lace, and a hint of lingerie-inspired design gave her appearance a romantic yet daring edge.

Her choice of color was no coincidence. In the film, Ortega portrays Klara, a solar-powered humanoid robot known as an Artificial Friend, who embodies innocent wonder. Thus, the sunlit palette aligns perfectly with her character. W Magazine highlighted that Klara’s connection to the sun may explain Ortega’s recent preference for golden accents on the red carpet.

This thoughtful approach to her wardrobe reflects a clever method of dressing. While ‘Wednesday’ leaned towards severe, witchy styling, this project encourages her to embrace warmth and light, as seen with yellow sleeves at the photocall and gold at the gala. The result tells a compelling story without uttering a single word.

The week began on October 14 with a photocall at The Corinthia Hotel, where she was joined by co-star Amy Adams and director Taika Waititi. Ortega sported a color-blocked outfit from Calvin Klein’s spring 2027 collection, featuring a yellow-and-white top paired with a black column skirt. She also brought along her black whippet, Twigs, who captured plenty of attention.

Ortega adopted Twigs from an animal sanctuary in Ireland while filming the second season of ‘Wednesday’. She has mentioned that having the dog around is comforting due to her extensive travel for work. The duo was nearly color-coordinated, with Twigs showcasing a silky dark coat.

‘Klara and the Sun’ is an adaptation by Waititi of Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2021 novel, a dystopian sci-fi drama centered around an Artificial Friend who forms a bond with a young girl named Josie, portrayed by Mia Tharia. Adams plays Josie’s mother, with a cast that also includes Natasha Lyonne, Steve Buscemi, and Aran Murphy. This film marks a reunion for Ortega and Buscemi, who previously collaborated on ‘Wednesday’ season 2.

Filming took place in New Zealand from January to April 2024 under the working title ‘Tears and Rain’, and the film sat on Sony’s shelf for over two years. It is set to hit U.S. theaters on October 23, following its gala screening at the 70th BFI London Film Festival.

Early reviews have been mixed but generally positive toward Ortega’s performance. Screen Daily described the adaptation as overstuffed but noted that many viewers are likely to appreciate Ortega’s charming portrayal of Klara. The review also mentioned that Waititi appears to be maturing in his approach, while acknowledging that the film rushes through plot points, which may dilute its focus on Klara’s relationship with the world.

This balance makes the press tour particularly significant. A more subdued, emotional role marks a notable shift for an actress primarily recognized for her deadpan horror performances, and the festival buzz indicates that audiences are eager to see her in a different light.

Regardless of the film’s ultimate reception, her fashion choices have already garnered significant attention. Ortega has a talent for transforming every appearance into a talking point, and this golden moment may stand out as one of her most memorable yet. It demonstrates her ability to reinvent her aesthetic while maintaining an element of drama.
