The television landscape has undergone a significant transformation in the last decade, with character-driven dramas reclaiming their place at the forefront of streaming platforms. Prolific screenwriter and producer Taylor Sheridan is at the heart of this movement, as his expansive cable and streaming universe continues to attract a dedicated audience. The hit mafia comedy-drama ‘Tulsa King’ has shown that legendary cinematic figures can thrive in long-form episodic crime television.

Viewers quickly embraced the unique blend of classic underworld tension, unexpected humor, and traditional machismo set against suburban and rural backdrops. The original series showcased a remarkable narrative flexibility, proving that modern mob stories need not be confined to traditional urban centers like New York or Chicago. As network executives sought to replicate this success, discussions intensified about how to realistically expand the narrative universe.

This ambition took shape when Deadline initially reported that Hollywood icon Samuel L. Jackson was finalizing plans to lead a dedicated spinoff. The project is set to star Jackson as Russell Lee Washington Jr., a formidable underworld figure whose past directly connects with Dwight Manfredi. Rather than a fleeting guest appearance, Jackson’s role was designed from the start to serve as the foundation for a new crime narrative.

Audiences got their first look at Jackson’s intriguing character during the third season of ‘Tulsa King’, where Washington made his debut in crucial episodes alongside Sylvester Stallone. Sent by rival New York mob bosses to eliminate Dwight, the deadly ex-convict instead honored a two-decade bond formed during their shared 10-year prison sentence. Choosing loyalty over corporate contract killings, Washington spared his former ally and aimed to establish an independent organization.

Initially developed under the working title ‘NOLA King’ with plans to set the story in Louisiana, key creative changes quickly shifted the production’s direction. Following the exit of original showrunner Dave Erickson, Sheridan took direct control of the narrative. This led to a relocation of the setting from the bayous to the affluent suburbs of Frisco, Texas.

Paramount Television Studios president Matt Thunell emphasized the significance of Sheridan’s involvement, stating in a statement reported by Variety, “We are honored to have Taylor Sheridan write the first season of ‘Frisco King’ and bring to life Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic character. Having him pen all episodes of the season with his singular voice will be a treat for fans of ‘Tulsa King’ and audiences around the world.”

With Sheridan personally writing all eight episodes of the debut season, ‘Frisco King’ centers on Washington as he transforms a seemingly innocent suburb into a thriving criminal enterprise. Beneath well-kept lawns and corporate parks, the seasoned gangster begins recruiting local talent to navigate modern illicit operations. The main cast includes Asa Germann as Teddy, a resourceful college dropout who becomes Washington’s ambitious right-hand man.

The supporting cast also includes Kai Caster as a local luxury hotel valet named Keith, along with Lilah Pate as London and Savanna Gann as Avery, two influential locals drawn into the world of organized crime. Additionally, Arturo Del Puerto plays Hector, an enterprising landscaper whose access to residences proves crucial for the emerging syndicate. Stallone is set to make a special guest appearance as Dwight Manfredi, reinforcing the connection between the two series.

Reflecting on his experience working with Jackson, Stallone expressed admiration for the effortless presence his long-time colleague brought to the set in an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “He’s just cool… not many people can do that, can have that kind of control, and be that relaxed in the moment,” Stallone noted, highlighting their initial on-screen interaction. This dynamic promises to set the stage as the criminal empire ventures into new territory.

With principal photography wrapped up in Fort Worth, Texas, Paramount+ has announced that ‘Frisco King’ will officially premiere on December 18, 2026, debuting with two consecutive episodes. New episodes will follow weekly every Friday, providing viewers with eight weeks of high-stakes suburban power struggles. As Sheridan continues to build one of the most prolific television universes in modern entertainment, Jackson’s addition ensures the franchise remains as sharp and unpredictable as ever.

Let us know in the comments below if you are excited to see Samuel L. Jackson create his own suburban mob empire in ‘Frisco King’ or if you would have preferred the original New Orleans setting.
