Few modern franchises have transformed moviegoing into a major event like ‘Dune’ has. With ‘Dune: Part Three’ set to conclude Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy this December, excitement has been mounting for months. Fans now have a prime opportunity to secure their seats.

This new film adapts Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune Messiah’ and takes place 17 years after the previous installment. Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is now Emperor and married to Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), while maintaining his connection with Chani (Zendaya). Villeneuve has indicated that this installment leans more into thriller territory and features increased action compared to the earlier films.

General pre-sales for ‘Dune: Part Three’ commence on Tuesday, October 20, with tickets available worldwide for all formats and time slots. This rollout follows two earlier rounds of pre-sales that included previews and select IMAX and premium large format screenings.

The film is set to premiere in North America on December 18, with international screenings starting on December 16. Early-access Dune Insider screenings will kick off on December 14 in IMAX 70mm, expanding to digital IMAX the following day.

This staggered approach mirrors Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, which saw IMAX 70mm tickets go on sale a full year prior to its release. IMAX later reported record pre-sales of $50 million for that film, along with a $52 million global IMAX opening weekend. Studios have clearly recognized that early ticket sales for a big-screen event can generate significant buzz.

‘Dune: Part Three’ has adopted this strategy. The initial batch of IMAX 70mm tickets was released in April across 19 global locations, and GamesRadar noted they sold out in under three hours. A subsequent round, timed with a new trailer, included additional premium large format screens and sneak peek fan screenings.

The ticket push is especially significant as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to release on the same day. Fans have dubbed this clash “Dunesday,” and Marvel’s film has reportedly garnered $16.5 million in its first 24 hours of advance ticket sales, a tough benchmark to surpass.

However, Villeneuve’s finale has a key advantage. It is said to hold IMAX exclusivity for three weeks, preventing Marvel from entering that premium format during a crucial holiday season period.

The film was also designed with IMAX in mind. It is the first in the franchise to be partially filmed using IMAX cameras, and cinematographer Linus Sandgren captured the desert sequences in IMAX Digital. Both previous ‘Dune’ films featured full-frame IMAX sequences, making this a natural progression.

Alongside Chalamet, Zendaya, and Pugh, the returning cast features Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, and Charlotte Rampling. Anya Taylor-Joy reprises her role as Alia Atreides, and Robert Pattinson joins as Scytale. Villeneuve has stated that this will be his final journey to Arrakis.

Fan enthusiasm is already evident, with the official trailer surpassing 38 million views on Warner Bros.’ channel. Now, the real challenge begins, as ticket sales will determine how many of those viewers will attend on opening weekend.
