Few Marvel characters boast a fan base as dedicated as Matt Murdock’s. Following Netflix’s cancellation of ‘Daredevil‘ in 2018, fans campaigned for years until the Man Without Fear made his return. Now, as the revival approaches its conclusion, the news has struck a deeply personal chord.

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ premiered on Disney+ in March 2025 and is set to conclude with its upcoming third season. This announcement was made during Marvel Television’s panel at New York Comic Con, marking the end of a journey that began with the original series in 2015.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at New York Comic Con, star Charlie Cox shared how the news affected his family. The 43-year-old actor revealed that his young son was heartbroken upon learning that the show was coming to an end. While Cox anticipated that saying goodbye would be tough for him, he never expected it would hit his child so hard.

Cox noted that his son’s expression changed dramatically when he heard the news. This moment reflects the deep connection Cox has with the role, which he has often described as significant to him. “I’m trying to prepare my son for it more than I’m preparing myself,” he shared.

Cox expressed uncertainty about how anyone can truly prepare for such a farewell. He considers the role to be the most important of his career, having dedicated 12 years to it and estimating that he has portrayed Daredevil for around 70 hours.

He described the experience as a gift and an honor. Interestingly, his son has only recently begun to understand that his dad is a superhero, making the timing of the series finale even more poignant.

Season 3 is expected to debut on Disney+ in March 2027 and will feature eight episodes. Filming took place from March to July 2026 and has now concluded. Co-creator and showrunner Dario Scardapane has exited the series, which is currently in post-production.

The final season will pick up after the season 2 finale, where Matt Murdock revealed his identity and was arrested. A trailer description indicates that he will be suiting up behind bars. The cast includes Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, and Wilson Bethel as Bullseye.

Season 3 will also see the return of fan favorites from the original Netflix era, including Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, Finn Jones, and Élodie Yung. At New York Comic Con, Cox joined Ritter and Jones to preview clips from the upcoming season.

Marvel Television chief Brad Winderbaum has clarified that the revival was always intended to be a three-season story, mirroring the original series. This suggests that the finale is designed to be a true conclusion rather than a sudden cancellation. Many fans are still processing this news.

The viewership numbers tell a mixed story. ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ achieved the best series premiere on Disney+ for 2025, attracting 7.5 million viewers worldwide within its first five days. However, U.S. viewership dropped by approximately 50% in season 2, according to Luminate data.

Critics have been more consistently positive, with season 2 reviews highlighting it as an improvement over the first and praising the performances of Cox and D’Onofrio. This strong reception makes the decision to end the show feel even more bittersweet for fans.

Despite the series concluding, there appears to be potential for more of Cox’s Daredevil in the wider MCU. Winderbaum has indicated that there could be future opportunities for the character. Cox himself has been noncommittal when asked about what lies ahead.

Fans speculate that ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ could be a fitting place for the character’s return. For now, nothing has been confirmed, but it is clear that Matt Murdock’s current story is approaching its end.

For Cox, this final chapter serves as both a farewell and a reflection on how far the character has come. A role once thought to be finished in 2018 has experienced a revival and garnered a devoted audience. If his son’s reaction is any indication, the impact of this story transcends the screen.
