Movie Characters That Start With H: Iconic Names

‘H’ begins some of the most iconic names in the movie world, so let’s have a look at some of the biggest fictional characters out there.

We’ll go through characters from animated and live actions films, so strap in and join me as we go through this curated list!

1. Hades (Hercules)

A head of fiery flame for hair goes with a very fiery temper, he is often overlooked compared to his elder brother, Zeus as Hades is just the head of the Underworld.

Sick of playing second fiddle, he hatches a plan to take over Mount Olympus but must first get rid of Hercules, which he does via having the infant drink a potion, but due to incompetence the baby doesn’t drink all of it.

2. HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey)

Standing for Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer, HAL is the brains of the Discovery One, helping with maintaining all systems on the spaceship and assisting the crew where necessary.

After HAL seemingly makes some mistakes, the crew decides to deactivate him but HAL deduces their plans, and decides to kill the crew instead. 

3. Hamm (Toy Story)

A wisecracking piggy bank that he dives into when necessary, he seems to be best friends with Mr Potato Head due to their similar personalities. Hamm and Rex have a cordial relationship, but sometimes Rex is a bit too anxiety-ridden for the docile Hamm.

Hamm is not afraid to say what’s on his mind, but his calm if slightly pessimistic demeanor does put him at an advantage when making the big decisions.

4. Han Solo (Star Wars)

A human male smuggler, he was famous for his heavily modified ship the Millennium Falcon. With his trusty copilot Wookiee Chewbacca, he has been chased by Jabba the Hutt after he had to dump a spice shipment after getting pursued by the Empire.

This led him to helping destroy the Death Star, rescue his future love Princess Leia and then encased in carbonite after being turned over to Jabba by a conspiracy between Darth Vader, Lando Calrissian and Boba Fett.

After being promoted to General, he then helped destroy the second Death Star and had a child, only for the child also to fall to the dark side of the Force like his grandfather, and eventually slay Han Solo.

5. Hank (Finding Dory)

Finding himself in the Marine Life Institute, Hank has lost a tentacle but has a massive desire to haul his orange body out of captivity and is determined to get to Cleveland. His plan to get there means going through Quarantine, but he’ll need a tag.

Dory has the business, so now it’s just a matter of convincing her to hand it over.

A defensive squirt of ink is used if threatened, and Hank’s nightmare is ending up in the petting tank.

6. Hannah Montana (Hannah Montana: The Movie)

Miley Stewart leads a double life, with the alter ego Hannah Montana being a superstar pop singer.

With a tabloid reporter trying to uncover Hannah’s secret, she starts alienating those around her by constantly appearing as Hannah Montana. However, her friend Lilly Truscott is a capable stand-in, and the two reconcile and work together to throw the reporter off the scent.

7. Hannibal Lecter (Red Dragon)

A serial killer cannibal and a psychopath to boot, Lecter is a brilliant surgeon and respected forensic psychiatrist before his life of crime is uncovered, with his piercing insights and experience making him the best in the world at unmasking other serial killers.

Serving multiple life sentences for his crimes, the FBI constantly attempts to pick his brain to solve the most baffling of cases, wary that Lecter is able to use the opportunities to escape.

He is easily able to outsmart those around him, often being five or six steps ahead of whatever schemes people are trying to catch him in. Eventually he meets his match in Clarice Starling, who he then has to be on the run from as she keeps finding him again.

8. Happy (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs)

Happy comes with a pot belly and a constant smile on his face. Full of joy and optimism, he loves parties as they combine two of his favorite things: dancing and food. He loves to laugh and giggle. Happy is social and outgoing, but knows when to be serious.

He convinces the others to provide shelter to Snow White after being targeted by the Huntsman and the Evil Queen, despite Grumpy’s protestations.

He is effective at organizing the dwarfs although at times can lose his calmness.

9. Dean Hardscrabble (Monsters University)

The dean of the School of Scaring, she is an Amazonian giant centipede, giving her quite the intimidating look and making her a top scarer, hence her move into teaching others how to do the same.. 

Taking her role as dean seriously, she won’t let students pass if they aren’t top scarers, and unfortunately for Sulley and Mike she doesn’t think they have what it takes.

Mike and Sulley don’t help things by breaking her prized scream canister and they have to work very hard to get back into her good graces via winning the Scare Games.

10. Harry Potter (Harry Potter)

An English half-blood wizard, he eventually fulfilled the prophecy to take out the evil Lord Voldemort, who killed his parents.

After being invited to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he was taught in the ways of magic and proved a capable, if accident prone and constantly involved in troubles, student.

After several near death experiences, he over time found out more about Voldemort and became stronger, especially against the Dark Arts. After many significant achievements, he eventually formed Dumbledore’s Army with Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger.

This led to an ultimate showdown with Voldemort, with Harry having won several Quidditch Cups, had saved many students and teachers from death, destroyed Voldemort’s Horcruxes, conjured a corporeal Patronus and won the Triwizard Tournament along the way.

He has an instantly recognizable scar on his forehead, a result of surviving the Killing Curse due to being magically protected by his mother’s loving sacrifice.

11. Héctor Rivera (Coco)

Héctor is Miguel’s great-great grandfather who was murdered by Ernesto de La Cruz as Ernesto wanted to become a singer and stole all his songs.

Stuck in the Land of the Dead, he doesn’t realize Ernesto’s betrayal has led to music being banned in the family, and Miguel makes the journey to find out what happened.

Héctor has a great passion for music but is still carefree at heart, always willing to play a good prank.

12. Heihei (Moana)

Heihei (or Hei Hei) doesn’t contribute much apart from a vacant stare.

He inadvertently stows away in the boat and comes along for the ride, and isn’t exactly the most useful sidekick in movie history.

His bright plumage consisting of a red feather head, yellow neck and green and blue body makes him quite the sight.

13. Heimlich (A Bug’s Life)

A caterpillar who has the role as a clown in PT Flea’s Circus, he can’t stop eating, even if it means chomping down on the guests of the circus show.

With an outrageous German accent, his large green girth almost gets him killed when he can’t fit through a crack when being attacked by a bird. His time in the cocoon was not long enough, resulting in him having tiny wings when he changes into a butterfly.

14. Hellboy (Hellboy)

The child of the demon Azzael and the witch Sarah Hughes, Hellbody appears as a large muscular demon, all in red, with a tail and with shorn horns (he filed them off). Being summoned to Earth with the help of the Third Reich in 1944.

His right arm is oversized and made of stone, referred to as the Right Hand of Doom, and he has cloven hooves for feet. Having been raised as a normal human, he has a gruff personality but none of the evil or malevolence of a typical demon.

15. Hercules (Hercules)

The legendary son of Zeus and blessed with almighty strength, his uncle Hades attempts to kill him as Hercules is one of the last obstacles in Hades’ way.

After failing to drink the entire contents of the poison given to him by Hades’ henchmen, he retains his mighty strength but became mortal, thus was sent to grow up in Greece to achieve greatness as he was his destiny.

While he learns that defeating enemies isn’t so hard, being a true hero requires a lot more, as revealed to him by Megara. He finds it hard to control his immense strength, often causing a lot of unintentional destruction.

Zeus creates the winged-horse Pegasus, who becomes Hercules’ best friend and loyal steed, with the ability to fly at great speed and will assist Hercules where he can. 

16. Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)

The book smart and extremely capable wizard especially in the realm of spells, she joins forces with Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley, and the three of them achieve great things in the halls of Hogwarts.

Hermione is so keen to attend class, that she gets a time-turner from Professor McGonagall in order to go back in time and attend even more classes.

Being one of Harry’s most steadfast friends, she assists him in all manner of tasks including schoolwork and in the Triwizard tournament. She also is the driving force between the Dark Arts defensive organization, Dumbledore’s Army, despite Harry’s protestations.

17. Hiccup Haddock III (How to Train Your Dragon)

From a young age Hiccup showed how he was able to control dragons from a young age, when a Stormcutter dragon broke into their house and to play gently with the baby Hiccup.

A witty and sarcastic but brave young man, he can be shy at times but has a high intellect and is very kind.

His skills with weaponry are only improving due to him being an blacksmith’s apprentice, but his small and scrawny frame means he is not very useful in hand-to-hand combat, and he has a prosthetic for his left leg up to his shin.

18. Hiro Hamada (Big Hero 6)

The leader of Big Hero 6, he is a genius inventor who made his name through bot-fighting. His supreme confidence in his bots means he always won, which sometimes caused him to use a bit of deception to make his opponents put down bigger bets.

This immature approach eventually leads him right into trouble, as he messes with some underground figures and makes them lose face in front of everyone, making a powerful enemy for life.

19. Sir Hiss (Robin Hood)

A snake with the power of hypnosis, he is able to put King Richard in a trance and sends him off to the Crusades, using the power vacuum to try and usurp power in the King’s absence.

Prince John is the human he decides to push onto the throne and control him from the shadows, but Sir Hiss’ choice of future monarch is a bad one, due to Prince John’s inability to do almost anything, and his incompetence.

This often works out doubly poorly for Sir Hiss, as if he points out the obvious issues or failures of Prince John, he normally gets a bonk on the snout. After a series of failures and the return of the King, Sir Hiss is imprisoned and put to hard labor in a quarry.

20. Homer Simpson (The Simpsons Movie)

Extremely dull and lazy, Homer loves nothing more than to watch TV and drink beer. With a family he loves but doesn’t quite show him as much dedication in return, he has a solid circle of friends but hates his straight-laced neighbor Ned.

With a son who drives him insane, and a daughter who is the polar opposite, Homer is busy with his often out of control life. Despite his shortcomings, he has achieved many amazing things, including becoming an astronaut.

21. Hopper (A Bug’s Life)

The leader of the grasshoppers who’s not beyond using fear, violence and intimidation to get what he wants, Hopper is a Carolina grasshopper who bullies the ants into collecting food for him.

His big weakness is birds, having lost an eye in an encounter with one. He is sensitive about this, and is not keen to let anyone know, particularly the ants.

He is a lot larger than the ants, but to his peril he finds out that the ants’ real strength lies in their numbers, and when Flik and others show them that, the grasshoppers and Hopper lose immediately.

22. Horace Badun (101 Dalmatians)

Working with Jasper to do Cruella’s dirty work, he is the muscle but is often unwilling to enact violence.

He kidnaps Pongo and Perdita’s puppies for money, although after getting caught he decides to follow his passion and starts a clothing business.

23. Hugo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)

Residing in the Notre Dame cathedral, Hugo is a gargoyle who can switch between animate and statue form. Hugo and the other two gargoyles are friendly with Quasimodo.

Outgoing and talkative, he hates birds because they love to nest in his open mouth, as when he is in statue form his mouth is always open. He is into cross species romance as he has a very intimate relationship with Esmeralda’s goat Djali.
