The Borderlands series has always been known for its unique humor. The first game used a lot of toilet jokes, while the second game included popular memes from that time. In the third game, the main bad guys were designed like online streamers.

Now, with Borderlands 4 coming out in 2025, many of us are curious about its tone. Anthony Nicholson, a senior producer at Gearbox, shared that the game’s humor will change. He mentioned that as games and players’ tastes evolve, so does their storytelling. This means Borderlands 4’s humor will be different from before.

Nicholson explained that the new game’s tone will be a mix of the first and second games. This suggests it will have the straightforward humor of the first game and the meme-inspired jokes of the second. He also assured that the fun and sometimes wild writing that makes Borderlands special will still be there.

In a past discussion, Sam Winkler, the narrative director, talked about reducing the overuse of toilet humor in the new game. He emphasized that while the game will remain entertaining, it won’t rely on outdated jokes or themes.

In short, Borderlands 4 aims to keep the series’ signature fun but with updated and more thoughtful humor. This approach hopes to appeal to both longtime players and newcomers.
