A new version of the classic Hansel and Gretel fairytale is coming our way, and it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before. Stephen King, the master of horror, has reimagined the Brothers Grimm tale with Maurice Sendak’s eerie artwork, which was originally created for a 1997 opera production of the story.

This new picture book is set to be published in the US by HarperCollins Children’s Books and in the UK by Hodder Children’s Books on September 2, 2025. The book brings together two of the biggest names in literature, each with a lasting impact on both children’s and adult fiction.

King’s unique writing style perfectly matches Sendak’s haunting illustrations, creating a truly chilling experience for readers of all ages.

The story sticks to the original plot, featuring two children lost in a dangerous forest and the wicked witch with her sinister candy house. But what makes this version special is how King gives the story a dark twist.

In his introduction, he explains how he was inspired by two of Sendak’s illustrations: one showing the witch flying on her broom with a bag of kidnapped children, and another of the candy house taking on the shape of a terrifying face. For King, these images captured the essence of the story—a sweet exterior hiding a dark and twisted center.

King reveals that he has always been drawn to stories about brave kids facing evil forces. He says, ‘I wanted to write that!’ referring to the moment when the kids realize the house is more than it seems. It’s clear that King and Sendak share a deep connection with the darker side of fairytales, and they’ve brought it to life in this haunting reimagining.

With the help of The Maurice Sendak Foundation, this collaboration promises to be one of the year’s most exciting literary events. Fans can look forward to a mix of terror, beauty, and nostalgia when this new version of Hansel and Gretel hits shelves.
