A24 Reportedly in Talks to Revive Action Classic with ‘Bloodsport’ Remake

A24, the independent film studio known for its unique and critically acclaimed films, is reportedly in negotiations to acquire the rights for a remake of the 1988 martial arts classic “Bloodsport.”
“Bloodsport” is widely recognized as the film that launched Jean-Claude Van Damme’s career, portraying the character Frank Dux, an American martial artist participating in a secretive and brutal tournament known as the Kumite.
The original movie has since become a cult favorite among martial arts enthusiasts and action movie fans.
The information regarding the potential remake comes to us from Jeff Sneider.
This potential remake aligns with A24’s reported interest in expanding into more commercial films and acquiring established intellectual properties.
Fans have expressed mixed reactions to this development, with some excited about A24’s involvement and others concerned about the studio’s shift towards mainstream projects.
While discussions are ongoing, no official announcements have been made regarding the cast, director, or production timeline for the “Bloodsport” remake. Given A24’s reputation for delivering distinctive and high-quality films, audiences are eager to see how the studio might reimagine this martial arts classic for a new generation.
In 2011, plans emerged for a remake of the 1988 martial arts film Bloodsport. Phillip Noyce was initially set to direct, with a script by Robert Mark Kamen, focusing on an American Afghanistan War veteran entering a vale tudo tournament in Brazil.
By 2013, James McTeigue took over as director, aiming to shoot in Australia and Brazil but nothing ultimately happened.
