Amazon Is in Talks for a New Power Rangers Project After Disney+ and Netflix
It’s go-go time for Power Rangers fans, but only after a very long wait. The search for a home for the next live-action Power Rangers series has stretched across multiple streamers, with every promising lead seeming to power down before reaching the screen.
The franchise that began in 1993 with ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ has spawned numerous seasons, offshoots, and movies since. Its most recent chapters landed on Netflix, including ‘Power Rangers Dino Fury’, ‘Power Rangers Cosmic Fury’, and the 2023 reunion special ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always’, which celebrated the 30th anniversary. Since then, however, fans have had little to cheer about on the live-action front.
Hasbro has owned the brand since acquiring it from Saban in 2018, and it has been attempting to launch a new live-action series ever since. A Netflix project that spent over two years in development ultimately stopped moving forward in 2024, with Hasbro announcing it would explore a new creative direction with a different partner.
That partner seemed to be found in March 2025, when ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz were reported to be developing a reinvention for Disney+. Hasbro would produce, with 20th Television as the studio. However, in August 2026, Deadline reported that Disney+ had canceled the project.
Now comes the latest twist. According to recent insider chatter, Amazon is in active discussions to take over development of a new Power Rangers project for Prime Video. Some versions of the rumor suggest that the talks could involve either a TV series or a movie, though no official details about format or release plans have been confirmed.
It’s crucial to note that this remains unconfirmed. Neither Amazon nor Hasbro has publicly commented, so fans should treat the news as a rumor rather than a done deal. Still, the possibility offers the franchise a fresh route forward after two high-profile setbacks.
The reasons behind the Disney+ cancellation are significant. Deadline reported that the decision was driven by budget constraints rather than creative differences. Delivering the elaborate costumes, effects, and large-scale action that modern audiences expect from a Power Rangers show requires a substantial investment.
There was also a business consideration at play. Since Hasbro owns the brand, Disney had to evaluate whether spending that kind of money on another company’s property made sense when it could fund projects from its own portfolio. This logic doesn’t apply the same way to every streamer, which may explain why a deep-pocketed rival is now interested.
Amazon has already demonstrated a willingness to collaborate with Hasbro. Nerdist previously noted that Amazon MGM Studios and Hasbro were working on a live-action ‘Jem and the Holograms’ series, and it even suggested that Hasbro should partner with Amazon on a live-action ‘Power Rangers’ show. A ‘Masters of the Universe’ movie, another toy-driven franchise, also moved to Amazon MGM Studios with a June 2026 release date.
While the comparison isn’t perfect, the similarities are hard to ignore. Both brands are decades-old toy properties with devoted nostalgic fan bases and a wealth of untapped potential. Ubergizmo’s report also mentions that Amazon has been aggressively expanding its catalog of major intellectual properties and nerd-culture staples to drive long-term subscriber engagement.
While the live-action series searches for a home, Hasbro has kept the brand visible in other ways. It has been releasing a 4K remastered version of the original series, titled ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Re-Ignition’, on YouTube, along with bite-sized shorts drawn from the 1990s episodes. Additionally, it licensed a new toy line to Playmates, which launched in the fall of 2025.
The comics are also keeping interest alive. BOOM! Studios launched ‘Power Rangers Prime’ in November 2024, an ongoing series that reimagines the mythos for a new era. Together, these efforts show that Hasbro is working to maintain interest until a major screen project finally materializes.
The franchise’s recent history on the big screen has also been rocky. The 2017 ‘Power Rangers’ reboot reportedly earned about $142 million worldwide against a $100 million budget, which was viewed as a disappointment despite generally positive reception. It serves as a reminder that success for this property hinges on the right budget and the right partner.
For now, fans will need to exercise patience. A rumored negotiation is a long way from a greenlight, and the franchise has experienced false starts before. However, if the talks lead somewhere, Prime Video could finally provide the Rangers with the home they’ve been missing.
