The Toronto International Film Festival is a pivotal event where a film’s destiny can be influenced in just a few days, often bringing families together to support the cast. This year, one father-daughter duo captured attention on the red carpet outside Roy Thomson Hall, creating a heartwarming moment amidst a week filled with premieres and panels.

The highlight was Trudie Styler’s new film ‘Up Against It’, a British comedy-drama centered around an unusual family crisis. Antonio Banderas stars as Álvaro, a renowned conductor, alongside Eva Birthistle, who plays his soon-to-be ex-wife Saffron. Their teenage daughter Rose, portrayed by Eden Hamilton, is confronted with a recurrence of childhood cancer, placing the couple in a challenging predicament.

This brought Antonio Banderas and his daughter Stella to the red carpet on Thursday, September 17, for the film’s TIFF gala. Stella, who recently celebrated her 30th birthday, donned a stylish black long-sleeved midi dress featuring an asymmetric neckline and draped detailing, complemented by sunglasses. Banderas, 66, coordinated with her in a black suit and a black shirt adorned with white stars, as the two posed happily for photographers.

Stella is not a frequent attendee at major red carpet events, making this appearance particularly noteworthy. E! News highlighted it as one of her rare significant public outings. She is the daughter of Banderas and Melanie Griffith, and has shown a preference for behind-the-scenes work over acting.

Her acting experience began in childhood when she played Marilyn in ‘Crazy in Alabama’, the 1999 film that marked her father’s feature directorial debut and starred her mother. Banderas and Griffith have maintained a friendly relationship post-split, and he is also stepfather to Dakota Johnson, who stars in ‘Verity’.

The film’s premise is intriguing. With Rose’s leukemia returning, doctors suggest an extraordinary treatment that would require her divorced parents to contemplate having another child together. Deadline described the film as a clever blend of comedy and drama, reminiscent of a twisted version of ‘The Parent Trap’.

The cast is impressive, featuring Forest Whitaker as the doctor, along with Úrsula Corberó and Arinzé Kene as the new partners in the parents’ lives, and appearances by Richard E. Grant and Mickey Sumner. The screenplay is penned by Chloe King and Camille Griffin, and the film was previously titled ‘Rose’s Baby’.

Styler, who also serves as a producer alongside Celine Rattray and Piers Tempest, has shared that the story resonates personally with her. Variety reported that her sisters are both nurses, prompting her to shift the setting from the U.S. to the U.K. She also mentioned that Banderas has been a part of her life since the 1990s, believing he would excel in the role.

Banderas described the film as a narrative that balances pain and humor, much like life itself. He noted that the daughter’s illness is just one of several challenges presented in the story, with the parents’ relationship also facing its own difficulties. This blend of humor and heartbreak is central to the film’s narrative.

Initial reviews have been mixed. Deadline praised Banderas and Birthistle for their performances and lauded Styler’s screenplay as smart and free of clichés. Conversely, Screen International labeled it an overly sentimental tearjerker that overlooks its broader themes.

Variety’s review echoed concerns that the film sidesteps its own dilemmas. Nevertheless, it has garnered attention for its portrayal of step-parents, with Dream Saga calling it one of the festival’s more divisive entries. The film is currently seeking U.S. distribution, with CAA managing domestic sales and Beta Cinema overseeing international sales.

The premiere also signifies Banderas’s return to the big screen. Hola noted his recent focus on theater and producing. He has been a familiar face at TIFF in the past, with ‘Pain and Glory’ earning him an Academy Award nomination.

Alongside the red carpet event, a celebratory reception was attended by Styler and her husband Sting. The film was screened again at the festival in the following days, marking a busy week for the cast eager to present the film to audiences.

For fans, the standout image was of the father-daughter duo posing together. It represented a touching human moment amidst the festival’s hustle and bustle, emphasizing the importance of family in Banderas’s life, both on and off the screen.
