Box office records are always in flux, and the competition for the title of the highest-grossing film of all time has become one of Hollywood’s most captivating rivalries. Two Disney-owned blockbusters have been exchanging the crown for years, and now one of them is nearing a figure that no film has ever achieved.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ originally seized the all-time record from James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ in 2019, a title ‘Avatar’ held for nearly a decade. The crown changed hands again in 2021 after a re-release in China, with ‘Avatar’ adding more re-releases to its tally. Since then, the two films have been in a constant battle for the top spot.

The most recent shift occurred with the release of ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ on September 25, which has propelled ‘Endgame’ back to the No. 1 position worldwide. Its current earnings are approximately $60 million shy of the $3 billion mark, and reaching that milestone would make it the first film in history to do so.

Disney and Marvel brought the film back with additional footage linked to ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and the strategy proved successful. The re-release opened with $86 million globally, which included $26 million from North America and $60 million from international markets. This opening ranks as the third-best for a re-release, following the 1997 special edition of ‘Star Wars’ and the 2011 3D re-release of ‘The Lion King.’

It also topped the domestic box office, marking the first re-release to achieve this since ‘The Lion King’ in 3D in 2011. The new scenes were complemented by Disney’s “Infinity Vision” certification for premium large formats, making it an appealing option for nostalgic fans.

By the second weekend, the re-release had added another $18.8 million worldwide, bringing its total to around $126 million. This pushed ‘Endgame’ to $2.9255 billion, narrowly surpassing ‘Avatar’ at $2.9237 billion. Although the gap is minimal, it was sufficient to reclaim the record.

This achievement is particularly impressive given the rarity of successful re-releases. One analyst pointed out that they typically earn less than $10 million, yet ‘Endgame’ managed to outperform a number of new releases despite being available for streaming for years. ‘Endgame’ now ranks third on the all-time domestic chart, behind ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ and it is only the second film to surpass $2 billion internationally.

However, the path to closing the $60 million gap is challenging. Domestic ticket sales for ‘Encore’ plummeted by more than 80% in its second weekend, indicating a significant slowdown. Maintaining momentum will be crucial for reaching the $3 billion milestone.

It’s important to note that the record-keeping comes with a caveat. As NPR highlighted, the competition between these films reflects rising ticket prices rather than increased attendance. With ‘Avatar’ trailing closely behind, the crown could easily switch again if Cameron’s film receives another release.

The timing of this re-release is strategic. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to open on December 18, facing off against ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which sets up an exciting box office showdown before the year’s end. The success of ‘Encore’ has theater owners buzzing, indicating a continued strong demand for the franchise.

Additionally, it’s been a robust year for Marvel, with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ nearing $2.5 billion. The MCU has now amassed a staggering $35.07 billion across all its films. Whether ‘Endgame’ reaches the $3 billion mark on its own or ‘Doomsday’ eventually challenges it, the upcoming months are poised to be record-breaking.
