After the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, BioWare faced significant challenges. The game, launched on October 31, 2024, garnered 1.5 million players in its first two months, falling short of Electronic Arts’ (EA) expectations of 3 million. This underperformance led to a series of layoffs and internal restructuring within the company.
In response to these events, Mark Darrah, a veteran developer formerly with BioWare, addressed the negative reactions from some individuals who appeared to celebrate the company’s misfortunes. These changes, coupled with the game’s underperformance, culminated in BioWare reducing its workforce to fewer than 100 employees, a significant decrease from over 200 just two years prior.
Despite receiving generally favorable reviews, The Veilguard struggled to meet EA’s sales expectations. EA’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, suggested that the game’s lack of shared-world features might have limited its appeal in a highly competitive market.
