Caitríona Balfe Discusses the Best Jane Austen Boyfriend as ‘Sense and Sensibility’ Hits Theaters
The debate over who is the ultimate Jane Austen boyfriend continues to captivate fans. Is it the brooding Mr. Darcy, the devoted Captain Wentworth, or perhaps one of the more understated gentlemen who often go unnoticed? This question resurfaces with each new adaptation, and this fall, it’s making waves once again.
Georgia Oakley’s latest film adaptation of ‘Sense and Sensibility’ is set to hit US theaters on October 16, following its UK release on September 25. The film arrives during what many are calling an Austen renaissance, coinciding with a Netflix miniseries of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and a Christmas special of ‘The Other Bennet Sister’. This release also commemorates the 250th anniversary of Austen’s birth.
At the film’s Los Angeles premiere, TheWrap caught up with cast member Caitríona Balfe, who plays Mrs. Dashwood, to get her take on the ongoing debate. In a brief video interview on the red carpet, the ‘Outlander’ star shared her thoughts, contributing to a press tour that has embraced the romantic essence of the source material.

The premiere took place on October 7 at the United Artists Theatre, where Balfe dazzled in a custom grey gown, as reported by RTÉ. Each cast member has brought their own flair to the press tour, which previously included a stop at Dublin’s Stella Cinema in September.
Joining Balfe on the red carpet were Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esmé Creed-Miles, Frank Dillane, Stacy Martin, Herbert Nordrum, and Bethany Slater. The film is a collaboration between Working Title and Focus Features, the same team behind the acclaimed 2005 ‘Pride & Prejudice’ and the 2020 ‘Emma’.
In this adaptation, Edgar-Jones portrays the sensible Elinor Dashwood, while Creed-Miles plays the sensitive Marianne. Balfe takes on the role of their widowed mother, with Bodhi Rae Breathnach as the youngest sister, Margaret. The male leads include George MacKay as Edward Ferrars, Nordrum as Colonel Brandon, and Dillane as the charming John Willoughby, with Fiona Shaw as the meddlesome Mrs. Jennings.
The narrative follows the Dashwood sisters after their father’s death leaves his estate to a male relative, compelling them to relocate to a modest cottage. The screenplay, penned by Diana Reid, is based on Austen’s 1811 novel, and the film has a runtime of 132 minutes. This marks Balfe’s first significant role since ‘Outlander’ concluded earlier this year.
This film arrives three decades after Ang Lee’s celebrated 1995 adaptation, which featured an Oscar-winning script by Emma Thompson and starred Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon. Cast members shared with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere that this new version is not intended to compete with the classic but aims to offer a fresh perspective on the material.
TheWrap’s review described Oakley’s adaptation as enchanting, earthy, and humorous, noting that it uncovers more melancholy than usual beneath Austen’s wit. This unique perspective emphasizes the daily struggles faced by women of the era, setting this version apart from its predecessors and adding depth to the romantic storylines.

The beauty of this debate lies in the fact that each Austen hero has their own merits. While Darcy often wins popularity contests, Wentworth has his loyal fans thanks to his famous letter, and Colonel Brandon has a dedicated following who argue he outshines the story’s official hero. A literature scholar once posited that a lesser-known hero, Henry Tilney, deserves recognition for his charm and warmth.
‘Sense and Sensibility’ presents a particularly intriguing dynamic, featuring three distinct suitors in Edward, Brandon, and Willoughby, with two of them genuinely deserving of support. This complexity makes it a natural conversation starter, especially for a cast frequently asked to share their favorites. It also explains why this question continues to arise at premieres.

For audiences this fall, the options are abundant. Netflix’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ features Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy, while ‘Sense and Sensibility’ boasts a cast filled with familiar faces from prestigious television. Together, these adaptations provide a fresh opportunity to compare the beloved heroes side by side.
For Balfe, this film also showcases her versatility beyond the Scottish Highlands. Her portrayal of a nurturing, practical mother in Austen’s world offers a different kind of romance than what she is typically known for.
