Activision and Infinity Ward have officially unveiled ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.’ The game is scheduled to launch in late 2026 on PC and modern consoles. A reveal trailer has already been released, providing players with their first glimpse of the story, setting, and tone of this latest installment in the iconic franchise.

The trailer depicts a global military conflict set in various locations worldwide, including cities like New York, Mumbai, Paris, and regions in Korea. The narrative seems to center around escalating tensions involving a North Korean faction. While full plot details are yet to be confirmed, familiar faces such as Captain Price and Ghost make an appearance, hinting at underlying tensions between them. The trailer also suggests connections to previous storylines within the Modern Warfare series.

The campaign is expected to maintain the cinematic flair that the series is known for, featuring large-scale missions and global conflicts. Initial details indicate a more grounded military tone compared to recent titles. However, specific story elements remain unclear, and developers have yet to elaborate on how returning characters fit into the timeline.

One of the most significant confirmed details is the release date. ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’ will be available on October 23, 2026. Season 1 content is anticipated to follow shortly after launch, continuing the game’s live-service model. This timing positions the release just ahead of other major entertainment launches later in the year, making it a crucial fall release for Activision.

The game will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Nintendo Switch 2. A notable change this year is that the game will not be available on older consoles like PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. This marks a shift towards current-generation hardware only, allowing developers to enhance visuals and performance.

Gameplay changes are also a significant aspect of the reveal. ‘Modern Warfare 4’ will feature a blend of new and returning multiplayer elements. The game will launch with approximately a dozen maps, in addition to large-scale 32 versus 32 battle maps that include vehicles. The Gunfight mode is also making a comeback, with expanded player options, including larger team sizes in certain variants.

One exciting new feature is a map called ‘Kill Block,’ which dynamically alters its layout and can shift through hundreds of possible configurations each match. This design aims to keep gameplay unpredictable and fresh. It will debut as a Gunfight map, with plans to expand it into other modes later.

A new system named ‘Gunny’ has also been introduced. This system allows players to bypass traditional Gunsmith customization and instead utilize automatic weapon builds tailored to their playstyle. Simultaneously, a new unified Create-A-Class system integrates operators, weapons, equipment, and killstreaks into a single loadout system.

Progression is also undergoing changes. Players will have the option to choose between regular leveling and a Classic Prestige system. The Classic Prestige option resets progression in exchange for special rewards, reminiscent of older Call of Duty games.

Movement mechanics have been adjusted as well. The game eliminates the Omnimovement system seen in previous entries. However, players will still enjoy advanced movement options like sliding and improved mantling. Developers describe the movement speed as faster than Modern Warfare II but more controlled than Modern Warfare III.

Several quality-of-life features are included. Map voting is returning, along with Theater Mode. A new UI system is being introduced, featuring cleaner menus and improved navigation. The game will also support offline campaign play, including offline shader compilation.

A major highlight is the return of DMZ mode. This extraction-style gameplay first appeared in Modern Warfare II but was later scaled back. In ‘Modern Warfare 4,’ DMZ is being significantly expanded. It will feature dynamic weather, changing mission objectives, and a more developed structure. Developers aim to compete in the growing extraction shooter genre.

Warzone is also undergoing significant changes. The game will be removed from older consoles as support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One concludes. It will fully transition to current-generation systems alongside the launch of the new game’s season integration. While exact timing has not been confirmed, it is expected around November 2026.

There are also changes coming to weapons and content sharing. Some older content may be removed or “vaulted” as the new game integrates into Warzone. This is part of a broader effort to streamline the ecosystem across Call of Duty titles.

Pre-order editions for ‘Modern Warfare 4’ will include special operator skins and bonus packs. These skins represent various countries and are part of the Vault Edition content. Additional cosmetic packs will also be available at launch and in other Call of Duty titles.

While not all details have been revealed yet, Activision has confirmed that a beta test for ‘Modern Warfare 4’ will occur before launch. More gameplay footage, multiplayer breakdowns, and DMZ details are expected to be shared closer to release through official Call of Duty channels.
