Camila Mendes Discusses Role in ‘Masters of the Universe’ for Who What Wear Feature
Camila Mendes has opened up about her role in the upcoming Masters of the Universe film, where she portrays Teela, a fierce warrior in the realm of Eternia. This interview is part of her feature as the magazine’s June 2026 cover star in a photoshoot captured by Gleeson Paulino.
The actress described this film as a unique experience unlike anything she has previously encountered. She noted that the scale of the production, the global press tour, and the surrounding attention have made it feel like a significant new chapter in her career. Mendes expressed that she has never worked on a project of this magnitude and is still adapting to the new challenges it brings.
Reflecting on the film’s production and promotion, she stated, “I’ve never been a part of something of this scale. I’ve never been a part of a proper press tour before, and I hear it’s really chaotic in a fun way but also really exhausting.”
Masters of the Universe is a live-action reimagining of the beloved He-Man franchise. It features Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, who embarks on a journey back to Eternia to embrace his destiny as He-Man and confront Skeletor. Mendes plays Teela, a vital ally who stands alongside him to protect their world.
In her interview with Who What Wear, Mendes shared her unexpected connection with her character. While Teela is portrayed as strong and focused on battle, Mendes emphasized that the emotional depth of the character resonated with her during filming.
She explained that Teela is not merely a warrior but also a character grappling with deeper emotional issues. Mendes remarked, “Teela was really in touch with her physical strength but not so much with her emotional side.” She noted that the character often feels the need to manage everything alone, even when she is struggling internally.
Mendes also highlighted that the film delves into themes beyond action and fantasy. For her, the narrative also explores vulnerability and the understanding that strength is not solely physical. She illustrated how Teela’s journey embodies this concept, particularly as the character gradually opens up emotionally throughout the story.
She said, “In her mind, she’s like, ‘I’m on my own in this world. Everyone is incompetent, and I need to take care of everything,’ but at the end of the day, there’s just a really sad little girl inside of her who feels abandoned.”
Mendes also discussed the broader themes of the film, particularly regarding masculinity and emotional expression. She emphasized that the movie does not aim to impose a message forcefully but rather tells a story that naturally incorporates these ideas.

She elaborated, “There is no agenda other than to breathe life back into a very beloved franchise.” Mendes added that the story naturally addresses masculinity, especially through Prince Adam’s journey, stating, “It’s not just about how masculinity can hinder us but also how it can help us.”
The interview also sheds light on Mendes’ current career trajectory. In addition to the film, she is juggling multiple projects and managing a busy schedule filled with filming and promotional activities. The Who What Wear feature showcases her in a high-fashion photoshoot styled with luxury pieces, positioning her as one of the prominent faces of the film’s release.
