Netflix has delivered a thrilling holiday surprise by releasing the first trailer for the upcoming survival film ‘Apex’. The footage introduces audiences to a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game featuring Academy Award winner Charlize Theron and Golden Globe winner Taron Egerton. Directed by Baltasar Kormákur, known for his work on ‘Everest’ and ‘Adrift’, the movie promises a gripping battle between humanity and nature. Kormákur returns to his roots in the survival genre with a script written by Jeremy Robbins.

The story follows Sasha, played by Theron, a grieving woman who seeks solace in the remote wilderness of Australia. She pushes her physical limits through extreme sports like rock climbing and kayaking, only to discover she is not alone. Egerton portrays Ben, a psychopath who turns her expedition into a deadly hunt where she becomes the prey. The cast also includes Eric Bana, who plays a significant role as Sasha’s partner, Tommy. This marks a darker turn for Egerton, who is typically known for playing heroic protagonists in films like ‘Kingsman’.

Production for the film took place in the rugged landscapes of New South Wales, Australia, which Kormákur describes as a character in itself. Theron committed heavily to the physicality of the role, revealing in interviews that she climbed actual mountains barefoot during the shoot. The trailer showcases these breathtaking and dangerous locations, emphasizing the isolation Sasha faces. Meanwhile, Egerton sports a shaved head and a menacing demeanor, signaling a complete transformation for his villainous role.

This project continues a strong relationship between the lead actors and the streaming giant. Theron recently starred in the sequel to ‘The Old Guard’, while Egerton appeared in the thriller ‘Carry-On’. By combining their star power with Kormákur’s expertise in capturing man-versus-nature conflicts, the film aims to be a standout release for the platform. Fans of tense, atmospheric thrillers will likely find plenty to appreciate in this adrenaline-fueled narrative.

‘Apex’ is scheduled to premiere globally on Netflix on April 24, 2026. Until then, viewers can analyze the teaser to catch glimpses of the traps and psychological warfare waiting in the bush. The anticipation is already building for what looks to be one of the most intense survival movies of the year.
