Witches, warlocks, and a perilous New Orleans boarding school are set to dominate Thursday night television. ‘Coven Academy’ premieres on October 1 on Freeform at 8 p.m. If you’ve been eager to see Disney’s darker teen soap come to life, the wait is almost over.

This new series comes from a creator who clearly has a passion for the genre. It draws inspiration from 90s teen dramas and supernatural classics like ‘Dawson’s Creek,’ ‘Hocus Pocus,’ ‘Practical Magic,’ ‘The Craft,’ and ‘Charmed.’ Here’s everything you need to know about the release schedule, where to stream, and what to expect from ‘Coven Academy’ before the first chapter airs.

This isn’t a traditional TV season. The first season comprises 21 short chapters instead of the usual hour-long episodes. The format is designed to be bingeable, with fast-paced chapters that pull viewers deeper into the narrative.

On Freeform, these chapters will be released in three weekly blocks. Nine chapters will debut on October 1, followed by six on October 8, and the final six will arrive on October 15. Rotten Tomatoes confirms this rollout, with the last chapters on October 15 focusing on a winter solstice celebration that brings danger.

There’s also an interesting piece of behind-the-scenes history. The series was initially intended for Disney Channel but was moved to Freeform ahead of the teaser trailer release. This shift aligns with the show’s older and darker tone.

Mark your calendar for primetime. The series premieres Thursday, October 1 at 8 p.m. ET and PT, which translates to 8 p.m. Eastern and 7 p.m. Central.

Viewers tuning in live will get to enjoy the opening block of nine chapters all at once. More chapters will follow on the linear schedule on October 8, with the season finale airing on October 15. This gives the show a proper weekly rhythm for anyone who enjoys appointment viewing.

Freeform is the primary platform for the premiere. The show airs on Freeform and is also available for streaming on Disney+, Hulu, and Freeform on Demand. The entire season will be available the next day, October 2, allowing viewers to binge-watch if they choose.

This means you can set your own pace. One writer covering the show mentioned that nostalgia for weekly releases made them want to catch it live on Freeform and savor the story. Others may prefer to binge the entire season over a weekend.

Disney is clearly positioning this as a seasonal event. The October launch places ‘Coven Academy’ among the company’s flagship Halloween season titles across both cable and streaming.

The premise is a classic teen drama with a magical twist. The story centers on three teenage witches and their dangerously charming warlock peers at an elite magic boarding school in New Orleans, where power is currency, secrets can be deadly, and attraction is a risk. Newcomer Briar discovers that the academy houses troubled teen girls and is one of several coven institutions designed to refine misunderstood powers.

The vibe is intentionally mature. The series is crafted to feel older and darker than typical Disney Channel fare, featuring mature themes, contemporary music, and a more cinematic style. The teaser trailer, set to Olivia Rodrigo’s hit song ‘Brutal,’ hints at tension within the coven, fueled by the mystery of Briar’s past and the dangerous desires of Jake.

The cast features a mix of rising stars and familiar faces. Malina Weissman portrays Briar, Tiffani Thiessen plays Miss Graves, Malachi Barton is Jake, Louis Thresher is Ollie, Jordan Leftwich is Sasha, and Ora Duplass is Tegan. Devon Sawa also joins the faculty.

At the helm is Tim Federle, who knows how to create a Disney teen hit. He shared with Teen Vogue that writing the pilot was the easiest task he had undertaken in a long time, as there was no existing property to meet expectations. He pitched the show as a love letter to the young adult series he cherished growing up. However, not everyone is on board; the conservative group One Million Moms has already cautioned parents about the witchcraft themes. So after Briar’s first night in Crescent Veil, do you think this new coven can stand alongside ‘Charmed’ and ‘The Craft,’ or is the school’s darker side already too much?
