‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ Season 2 Recap and Ending Explained D’s Fate
Night City continues to leave its mark on everyone, and the latest journey through its vibrant streets is no different. Four years after the heartbreaking tale of David Martinez captured audiences, Studio Trigger and CD Projekt Red have introduced a fresh cast while maintaining their signature emotional depth. Here’s a complete recap and explanation of the ending for the new season.
The sequel debuted on Netflix on October 20, releasing all 10 episodes simultaneously. This season tells a standalone story, separate from David and Lucy’s narrative, directed by Kai Ikarashi with Bartosz Sztybor returning as showrunner. The new characters include Weak Kingsley, a once-great figure now living without chrome, D, a driven netrunner seeking vengeance, Talia Yang, a former corporate employee drawn to the Maelstrom gang, and Roman Carax, a film enthusiast documenting their journey with a camcorder.
As the finale, ‘Then Everyone Went Home’, unfolds, these storylines converge in one of Night City’s most intense confrontations. Unlike the bloodshed of the first season, most of the main characters survive, yet D’s fate remains intentionally ambiguous.
The season begins with each character at a low point. Weak, previously known as King, struggles to find meaning after a cyberpsychotic episode that left him without cybernetics. D is consumed by a desire for revenge for his clan, while Talia is drawn to the violence of Maelstrom.
Roman’s perspective is captured through his camera, using grainy 4:3 footage that gives the series a unique feel compared to the first season. Sztybor has noted that while the original resembled a Michael Bay film, this installment takes a more grounded approach, akin to Martin Scorsese, with tragedy at its core.
In the climactic episode, a Capri-influenced Talia confronts her father, Kiril, on the streets of Night City. After being briefly incapacitated by Kang Tao soldiers, she retaliates by creating a metallic shield around herself, reminiscent of ‘Akira’. D, brainwashed and eager to merge with the other half of Capri, attacks her but later admits he no longer seeks revenge on Arasaka; he simply wishes to reunite with Capri.
Weak attempts to confront Kiril himself, but Talia intervenes, and he appears to be shot by Kang Tao, only to be saved by the urn containing Avida’s ashes. Kang Tao then leads Talia into the Badlands, calling in an airstrike. Kyoko counters with a device likened to an EMP on steroids, urging Roman and D to keep their distance.

When the EMP and missiles strike, Talia and D narrowly escape, but Kiril and Kyoko do not. Kiril meets a gruesome end, with half his face crushed beneath a vehicle. D then extracts the chip from Talia’s head and reunites with Capri, who guides him toward the sky.
Talia survives but must undergo chrome removal, with Weak accompanying her to a rehabilitation clinic. Before departing, she praises Roman’s filmmaking and vows to reunite someday. Weak expresses his desire to live, while Roman rushes off, eager to capture more footage as the camera pans up to a twinkling star.
The fate of D remains uncertain. After defeating the initial wave of Arasaka and Militech soldiers, he ascends toward a distant star, possibly a satellite, offering a final smile for Roman’s camera. Sztybor has indicated he knows what happens next but is keeping it under wraps, leaving the outcome open to interpretation.
GamesRadar suggests that D may have met a fate similar to David’s, dying in the fight against Arasaka. Interestingly, D shares David’s name, as the ‘D’ stands for David, which has sparked theories about remnants of David existing within Capri’s code, especially given their shared fascination with the moon and stars.

On the surface, Kiril has records and DNA tests to substantiate his claims, but there’s a possibility Avida was fabricating the story that Talia was Weak’s daughter to manipulate him. Regardless, by the end, Talia and Weak have forged a father-daughter bond, transcending blood relations.
Currently, there is no confirmation regarding a third season. Should it occur, it would likely follow a similar format, presenting an entirely new story set in Night City. The timeline suggests this season takes place several years after the first.
Initial reviews have been mixed yet engaged. One preview called it another potential hit despite its differences from the original, while another critic admitted they weren’t fully invested in Roman and Weak as they were in David. Nevertheless, the finale’s blend of survival, loss, and ambiguity resonates with the franchise’s essence.
