A psychological thriller thrives on tension, yet ‘Verity’ has also embraced a lighter side through the chemistry of its leads. Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway have been playfully joking, teasing, and finishing each other’s sentences throughout their press tour, and their appearance at the New York premiere was no different.

The duo has been inseparable leading up to the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel. They were spotted at a New York press day on September 15, with Johnson in a sleek black dress and Hathaway in a turquoise two-piece, showcasing her pregnancy glow as she awaits her third child. Hathaway missed the London premiere on September 24, making the New York event the first time the trio came together in person during this leg of the tour.

On Tuesday, September 29, at AMC Lincoln Square 13, a photo of Johnson and Hathaway doubled over in laughter on the red carpet has become the defining image of the tour.

In the snapshot, Johnson sports her dark bangs and a top bun, laughing heartily while Hathaway beams beside her. They are seen arm in arm against the premiere’s red backdrop, with Johnson’s dark nail polish visible as she holds onto her co-star.

Their contrasting outfits made a statement. Johnson wore a custom white Calvin Klein Collection two-piece adorned with crystal fringe, while Hathaway dazzled in a black custom Atelier Prabal Gurung strapless gown, complemented by emerald drop earrings and a sparkling bracelet.

Their laughter mirrors the fun atmosphere described by the cast during filming. Josh Hartnett noted that they enjoyed themselves and spent much of their time joking around between takes. Hathaway echoed this sentiment, calling ‘Verity’ a sexy thriller where the cast were just friends off-camera.

Johnson’s affectionate nickname for Hathaway, calling her Annie, further highlights their camaraderie, a name Hathaway has mentioned she prefers over Anne.

A moment that has captured fans’ attention is the kiss featured in the trailer. Johnson expressed to Extra that she would kiss Annie “for the rest of my life,” playfully apologizing to Hartnett afterward.

This scene is not part of Hoover’s original book. Both Johnson and Hathaway felt it was fitting for Lowen, who becomes deeply entangled in Verity’s life. Director Michael Showalter mentioned that the two improvised the moment where a makeout session with Jeremy transitions into a kiss with Verity.

Hathaway humorously noted that the cast shared kisses on screen, joking that it was a miracle nobody fell ill.

Hathaway also shared insights about one of the film’s most memorable visuals. While the production could alter certain aspects of Verity’s appearance, she noted that the headboard bite was too iconic to misrepresent.

She recounted laughing while figuring out how to convincingly portray the unusual scene, even resorting to biting a piece of balsa wood for practice. Johnson described the intimate scenes as technically challenging yet incredibly enjoyable, according to Out magazine.

‘Verity’ follows Lowen Ashleigh, portrayed by Johnson, a struggling writer enlisted to ghostwrite for bestselling author Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway. After Lowen discovers what seem to be Verity’s chilling autobiographical notes, she grapples with unsettling confessions about Verity’s husband Jeremy, played by Hartnett.

Hathaway has characterized the narrative as a strategy of mirrors, where appearances can be deceiving. The cast hopes the film will spark discussions among viewers about what truly transpired.

Showalter directs from a script by Nick Antosca, with the film set to hit theaters on October 2. The premiere also welcomed Hoover, Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Córdova, and Antosca to the red carpet.

Hathaway has indicated she plans to take a break from her career once the film is released, making the laughter shared on the New York carpet a fitting farewell to a busy press tour.
