Famous cinematographer Darius Khondji has shared exciting new details about Marty Supreme, the upcoming film from director Josh Safdie. The movie stars Timothée Chalamet as a table tennis champion named Marty Mauser — and Khondji says it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before.

The film is going to be unlike anything at the moment,” Khondji told Screen Daily while speaking at the Qumra lab in Doha on April 5.

Khondji, who also worked on Uncut Gems, is teaming up with just Josh Safdie this time, without Josh’s brother Benny. But that didn’t change much, according to him.

Josh has incredible energy to make films, like no one else I’ve experienced,” Khondji explained. “In every shot, he surprises you with what’s going to come. He works like this – it’s continuous inspiration, intuition.

Khondji said working with Safdie isn’t always easy, but the final result is special. Together, they even experimented with the film’s texture by pushing the negative to create a grainy look.

The grain is like the skin, it’s a very important thing on film,” Khondji said. He and colorist Yvan Lucas will start the coloring process in July. The movie is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

Marty Supreme will also feature a huge cast — Khondji said there are about 140 different characters in the movie. One of them will be played by Philippe Petit, the famous French highwire walker who was the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary Man on Wire.

It’s going to be a crazy movie, with a huge world of characters,” Khondji hinted.

The film is produced by A24, the same studio behind Uncut Gems, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and the upcoming Ari Aster film Eddington, which Khondji also worked on.

While Marty Supreme won’t be ready until later in the year, this early look is already building excitement — especially for fans of Chalamet, Safdie, and A24’s wild, original style.
