Every iteration of Jason Dessen in ‘Dark Matter’ seems to be pursuing the same elusive goal: a life where the multiverse simply leaves him be. Apple TV+’s sci-fi thriller has dedicated Season 2 to scattering its characters across various timelines, each one hoping that the next reality will finally feel like home.

Episode 4, titled “Stars, Hide Your Fires,” significantly slows the pace compared to the frantic dimension-hopping of the previous episode. Instead of introducing new worlds, this hour allows the characters to linger, letting the emotional fallout of the season catch up with them.

This patience pays off in the episode’s final moments when Daniela finally tells Jason she’s had enough. After weeks of witnessing his descent into obsession with the Box, she arrives at the conclusion the show has been hinting at all season: she can no longer try to pull him back from something he refuses to abandon.

The episode begins by revisiting Leighton, who spent last week bouncing between realities after escaping a hospital. His journey leads him into the Box and back to Jason’s low-tech world, where he tracks Jason down after seeing him flee campus upon realizing the Box has resurfaced. Jason confronts Leighton directly, insisting he leave this reality for good, and for now, it seems Leighton complies.

Meanwhile, Ryan, Amanda, and an alternate Jason known as Jason2 are attempting to return the original Ryan to his home world. They pause for a drink along the way, leading to one of the episode’s standout scenes: a candid, overdue conversation between Jason2 and Amanda about the selfish choices he made in trying to seize a life that was never his. Amanda is brutally honest, and under the weight of her words, Jason2 finally acknowledges his own shortcomings instead of deflecting them.

With the original Ryan safely returned, Jason2 asks to borrow a set of lilac wings, hinting at some unspecified good deed he plans to undertake, though the episode never clarifies what that entails. Ryan and Amanda, however, do not fare as well. They believe they have returned to their own world, only to discover something is amiss, and they are quickly apprehended at gunpoint by masked guards for violating quarantine and curfew.

The episode’s heavier emotional weight, however, lies with Jason and Daniela. After Charlie expresses his frustration with constantly uprooting his life, the family decides to abandon the idea of relocating again and instead attempts to settle into a fragile version of normalcy. Charlie secures a job alongside a friend named Eduardo, this reality’s version of Amanda’s son, and the two soon prepare to head off to college together.

For Jason and Daniela, maintaining that stability proves far more challenging. Daniela is recognized at an art gallery and later believes she has spotted a familiar Jason nearby, while Jason experiences a nearly identical moment of mistaken recognition outside the bar where he works. Neither turns out to be who they think, and neither shares their experiences with the other, but these near-misses highlight just how unsettled they both remain.

Once Charlie moves out for college, the fragile balance the couple had established begins to crumble. Daniela spends her time on long runs, replaying everything the family has endured, and even tracks down her father’s old store to ponder whether some version of him might still exist in this world. Meanwhile, Jason immerses himself in entanglement equations, convinced he can discover a way to scientifically sever this version of the Box from the rest of the multiverse entirely.

Ultimately, that obsession is what drives them apart. Daniela realizes Jason will never genuinely walk away from the Box or accept that there may be no straightforward way to detach himself from the multiverse for good, and she stops trying to persuade him otherwise. By the episode’s conclusion, she plainly tells him they need to separate, closing the hour on the show’s bleakest note yet for the Dessen marriage.

As ‘Dark Matter’ Season 2 continues its ten-episode run every Friday through October 30, the repercussions of Daniela’s decision are poised to influence whatever unfolds next for Jason, especially with Leighton, Jason2, and now Ryan and Amanda all entangled in new complications of their own.
