Destiny 2 is kicking off an exciting new story this year with two major expansions. The first is called The Edge of Fate and will be released on July 15. The second, Renegades, will arrive on December 2. Both expansions can be pre-ordered now and will begin what Bungie is calling the Fate Saga.

This new saga promises new places to explore, new stories to follow, and big changes to how the game plays. During a special reveal event, the Destiny 2 team shared a look at what’s coming in the Year of Prophecy, which includes both expansions and updates to the game’s core systems.

The Fate Saga dives into deep and mysterious questions. Guardians will start to wonder what fate really means and what powers might be watching or guiding them.

These mysteries are the heart of the new story, and the team says it will reward players who already love Destiny lore, while still being a good place for new players to jump in.

Before the Traveler ever arrived in our solar system, there was already magic here,” said Destiny Assistant Game Director Robbie Stevens. “With the Fate Saga, we want to explore one of Destiny’s biggest mysteries: the foundations of our universe.”

A big part of that mystery involves the Nine, strange beings that exist beyond time and space. Destiny players have heard of the Nine before, but now their secrets will become a major part of the action.

In The Edge of Fate, players will follow a message from one of the Nine to a new place called Kepler. Kepler is a small planet at the far edge of the solar system, covered in dark matter. It is unlike any other destination in Destiny.

We took inspiration from experiences like Dreaming City, dungeons, Exotic missions, and Metroidvanias when creating The Edge of Fate,” said Destiny 2 Narrative Director Alison Luhrs. “At the heart of The Edge of Fate is player-driven discovery and exploration utilizing brand new destination abilities.”

These new abilities will help players solve puzzles and fight enemies in new ways. One ability is called Matterspark, which lets the Guardian turn into a ball of energy. “Transforming into Matterspark lets you squeeze through tight spaces, jump and dash through the environment, and become a rolling ball of death, shocking and jolting enemies who dare come across you,” said Stevens.

Other new powers include the Relocator Cannon, which allows players to teleport using Void energy, and Mattermorph, which combines dark matter and Strand to change the world around you.

There will also be new characters, including one named Lodi, who was introduced during the reveal. Bungie has also made changes to how Destiny 2 plays overall. A new feature called Solo Ops gives players who prefer to play alone a chance to enjoy the game on their own time.

These are just some of the updates coming with The Edge of Fate and the Year of Prophecy. There are also changes to Power progression, gear tiers, activity customization, and even a new feature called Portal.

To get players ready, Bungie launched a special event today called Rite of the Nine. This event is a dungeon-style challenge that has new difficulty settings and a solo Explore mode. Players who complete it can earn Nine-themed Holofoil weapons. It serves as a taste of what’s to come in The Edge of Fate and beyond.

The journey is just beginning, and Guardians will have plenty to discover in the year ahead.
