Dexter’s Future Looks Bright As Star and Creator Tease Long-Term Plans

Dexter is coming back, and it might be staying for a while. Michael C. Hall, who plays the main character, and Clyde Phillips, the show’s creator, shared their hopes for the future of the series in a recent interview with Vanity Fair. They both say the upcoming sequel, Dexter: Resurrection, is just the beginning.
Dexter: Resurrection will continue the story from Dexter: New Blood, the 2021 miniseries that brought the character back after the original show ended in 2013. But that’s not all happening in the Dexter universe.
A prequel series called Dexter: Original Sin also premiered on Paramount+ in December 2024. The franchise is clearly growing, and the team behind it wants to keep going strong.
Clyde Phillips explained how confident they are in the series. “We’ve got the strongest franchise in Showtime’s history, and we plan to do this for years,” he said.
Michael C. Hall agreed and added, “Years with an s. The thinking is not to come back for a sort of self-contained one-off again, but leave it open to further exploration. The intention, and hope, is that the story will continue beyond this.”
Hall also described how the character of Dexter has changed over time. “He’s a much more human, flesh-and-blood version of that horror trope of someone who just refuses to go down,” he said.
With two active shows and more seasons being planned, it looks like Dexter’s story is far from over. Fans can expect a deeper look into the character and a longer journey ahead.
