Emily Hampshire Discusses E.D.I.T.H.’s Chaotic Nature in ‘VisionQuest’ and Tony Stark’s Influence
Few Marvel characters have transitioned from a voice in a pair of sunglasses to a fully developed personality as swiftly as E.D.I.T.H. The AI that once assisted Peter Parker now boasts a face, a wardrobe, and a mind of her own, thanks to Emily Hampshire. The discussion surrounding Emily Hampshire’s portrayal of E.D.I.T.H. has become one of the most talked-about topics since the debut of ‘VisionQuest’ on Disney+.
The Marvel Television series premiered on October 14 with a two-episode launch and will run for a total of eight episodes. Showrunner Terry Matalas, known for ’12 Monkeys’ and ‘Star Trek: Picard,’ crafted this series as the concluding chapter of a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ in 2021 and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’ in 2024. Paul Bettany reprises his role as Vision, who is evading those who wish to exploit him as a weapon.
While on the run, Vision consults various AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y. (Orla Brady), J.A.R.V.I.S. (James D’Arcy), Ultron (James Spader), and E.D.I.T.H. (Hampshire). He is also accompanied by a boy named Thomas Shepherd, portrayed by Ruaridh Mollica, who may be his reincarnated son. Together, these characters inhabit a reality-warping mansion within Vision’s mind.
At New York Comic Con, Hampshire elaborated on her interpretation of E.D.I.T.H., framing it as an intriguing thought experiment. She explained that the chaotic and unpredictable AI seen in ‘VisionQuest’ stems directly from her understanding of the character’s origins in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home.’ Her reasoning suggests that if Tony Stark encapsulated his ego into a pair of sunglasses, granted it access to dangerous weaponry, and then entrusted it to a teenager, the resulting AI would inevitably need to break free in a significant way.
Emily Hampshire says the chaotic EDITH AI seen in ‘VISIONQUEST’ is the result of her experience through ‘SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME’.
“If Tony Stark bottled his ego and put it into a pair of sunglasses, gave it access to all these dangerous weapons and gave her to a teenager, who would she be after being in those glasses?”— DiscussingFilm (@DiscussingFilm) October 14, 2026
E.D.I.T.H., which stands for Even Dead, I’m The Hero, first appeared in 2019’s ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ as an augmented reality security and defense system. Tony Stark left her to Peter Parker, providing him access to Stark Industries’ satellites, drones, and weaponry. In that film, she was merely a voice, performed by Dawn Michelle King.
Hampshire has emphasized in previous interviews the importance of building on that history rather than presenting E.D.I.T.H. as a brand-new character. She aimed to explore who E.D.I.T.H. would become if she were liberated from those glasses. This concept serves as the foundation for her performance.
In ‘VisionQuest,’ E.D.I.T.H. manages fun, leisure, and weaponry within the mindscape. Hampshire describes her as a blend of cheerleader, AI, and a malfunctioning theme park ride, a system once designed to grant a teenager access to global tools that has since been reprogrammed for amusement. She also encourages Vision to embrace life rather than merely observe it.
Her appearance reflects this energy. The character is styled like a 1920s aviatrix, complete with goggles, a scarf, and a flight jacket, as seen in the latest images. Matalas crafted the role with Hampshire’s voice in mind, having previously collaborated with her on ’12 Monkeys’ alongside Todd Stashwick and Faran Tahir.
Hampshire is widely recognized for her role as Stevie Budd on ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ and she hails from Montreal. She also stars in the Crave comedy ‘Slo Pitch.’ She has mentioned that she had to research the MCU upon being cast and has since watched all the films. Reports indicate she learned the studio’s secrecy rules while on the job.
This outsider perspective may help clarify why her E.D.I.T.H. feels so refreshing. Rather than mimicking the original voice, she approached the role as a new character with an established backstory within the franchise. The outcome is a vibrant counterbalance to Bettany’s more introspective Vision.

The origin story provides the chaos with a purpose. Stark’s technology was intended for protection and power, yet it was handed to a young individual who wasn’t prepared. Now liberated from the glasses, E.D.I.T.H. expresses that history in ways that are playful yet slightly perilous.
This also aligns with the broader themes of the series. Matalas has described the show as a profound exploration of intergenerational trauma between fathers and sons, with the relationship between Vision and Ultron at its core. A mischievous AI that embodies Stark’s legacy adds another dimension to that family dynamic.
