First Set Images From ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Excite Fans
Middle-earth enthusiasts have long awaited a glimpse of the world Peter Jackson crafted over two decades ago, and that anticipation has just become more tangible. With production actively progressing in New Zealand, the curtain has been lifted on one of Warner Bros.’ most eagerly awaited fantasy projects, offering fans their first authentic look behind the scenes.
This project is ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,’ and the newly released images reveal something fans have yearned for since the film’s announcement: a return to the Shire. The photos showcase fresh-faced Hobbits on location, including what appears to be Frodo Baggins approaching Bag End, the iconic round green door that is instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with the original trilogy.
Directed by Andy Serkis, who is also reprising his motion-capture role as Gollum and Sméagol, ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ is set before and during the events of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring.’ The story follows Gandalf as he sends Strider on a perilous mission to find Gollum before Sauron’s forces can extract the location of the One Ring from him. This narrative draws heavily from material developed in Tolkien’s appendices, exploring a period of Middle-earth history that was only briefly mentioned in the original films.

Elijah Wood is back as Frodo Baggins, while Ian McKellen reprises his role as Gandalf, marking a significant reunion for longtime fans of the trilogy. Notably, Dornan takes on the role of Strider, following Viggo Mortensen’s decision not to return for this project. Behind the scenes, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens are back as producers, the same creative team that guided both the original ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ trilogies to the screen, providing the new film with a strong sense of continuity even as it explores uncharted narrative territory.

Serkis has openly discussed the advancements in motion-capture technology since he first embodied Gollum over twenty years ago. Reflecting on the character’s return, he noted that the earlier films were largely confined to interior sets and basic motion capture, but that technology has significantly progressed since then, as he mentioned in comments given to Deadline. This evolution, partly influenced by his work on the ‘Planet of the Apes’ franchise, is expected to bring a level of nuance to this new performance that the earlier trilogy could not achieve.

In addition to performance capture, the production is reportedly utilizing de-aging technology to help portray some returning characters, including a younger version of Frodo, in a manner that aligns with the film’s earlier timeline. Filming is currently taking place across New Zealand and is expected to continue from July through October, with Warner Bros. Pictures aiming for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
With production now in full swing and the first authentic glimpses of the Shire reaching fans, excitement for ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ is likely to intensify in the coming months. Featuring a blend of returning icons and intriguing new cast members, the film has quietly assembled one of the most captivating rosters in recent franchise history.
