Norm Macdonald created a unique legacy in modern comedy, developing a style that has influenced countless comedians across generations. Since his passing in 2021, fans have eagerly awaited a project that would adequately capture his legacy on screen.

That anticipation is set to be fulfilled this fall as Netflix unveils a series of comedy documentaries throughout October, celebrating some of the genre’s most impactful figures. Among these, one project stands out with heightened excitement.

Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for ‘Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald,’ a documentary directed by Judd Apatow that chronicles the life and career of the late ‘Saturday Night Live’ icon. The film is scheduled to premiere on the streaming platform on October 16, marking the first significant documentary dedicated entirely to Macdonald since his death.

According to Netflix’s official logline, the documentary follows Macdonald’s journey from being the deadpan anchor of ‘Weekend Update’ to his lasting legacy as a “comedian’s comedian — a master of the absurd, the dry, and the unexpected.” This framing positions the film as more of a tribute to the unique comedic sensibility that endeared Macdonald to his peers rather than a conventional biography.

The documentary is constructed entirely from archival footage, personal photos, and rare home videos, many of which were provided directly by Macdonald’s fans and friends. Apatow had previously reached out on Instagram for “unique photos and videos of Norm,” gathering material that allows the film to present Macdonald’s story largely in his own voice.

This isn’t Apatow’s first venture into documenting the lives of comedy legends. He has previously explored the stories of icons like Mel Brooks, Garry Shandling, and George Carlin, establishing himself as a leading chronicler of comedic history.

Apatow directs the Macdonald documentary solo, with production support from Amanda Rohlke and Ross M. Dinerstein. The executive producer team includes Josh Church, Marc Gurvitz, Jon Liebman, Zoe Rogovin, and Mark McCune, showcasing a production effort that clearly honors its subject.

‘Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald’ is part of a larger wave of comedy documentaries debuting on Netflix throughout October. The lineup begins with ‘Who Is Martin Mull?’ on October 7, followed by the Macdonald documentary on October 16, then ‘Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story’ on October 23, and ‘SCTV: The Greatest Show You’ve Never Heard Of’ wrapping up the month on October 30.

Apatow is also behind the Maria Bamford documentary, giving him two entries in Netflix’s October comedy slate. This concentrated output reinforces his status as a key filmmaker for capturing the stories of comedy’s most significant figures.

Given Macdonald’s distinctive voice throughout his career, a documentary built from raw, unfiltered archival material seems like a fitting tribute to his legacy, rather than relying on traditional talking-head interviews. For devoted fans, the opportunity to hear Macdonald’s story told primarily in his own words carries significant emotional resonance.

With such a personal approach to the material, ‘Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald’ appears poised to deeply resonate with both long-time fans and new audiences discovering his work for the first time.
