Rick Flag Sr. has emerged as one of the most compelling elements in James Gunn’s DC Universe. The character has transitioned from an animated figure to a significant power player, and the excitement surrounding Frank Grillo’s portrayal of Rick Flag Sr. in ‘Man of Tomorrow’ continues to build.

Grillo first voiced the character in the animated series ‘Creature Commandos’ before bringing him to life in ‘Superman’ and ‘Peacemaker’ season 2. Throughout this journey, Flag, the father of Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag Jr. from ‘The Suicide Squad’, has taken over leadership of A.R.G.U.S. from Amanda Waller.

Recently, Grillo confirmed that Flag plays a significant role in the upcoming Superman sequel. In an interview with Screen Rant for ‘Tulsa King’ season 4, he described Flag as a crucial part of ‘Man of Tomorrow’ and hinted that there’s more to come for Rick Flag after the film.

This revelation raises eyebrows, suggesting that Flag’s narrative will extend beyond the sequel’s conclusion, although Grillo did not specify where the character might appear next.

This isn’t the first indication of Flag Sr.’s importance in the sequel. Grillo previously mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter that the character plays a key role in the storyline. Gunn has also noted that ‘Peacemaker’ introduced an unexpected alliance between Flag and Lex Luthor, hinting that this partnership will continue.

Gunn has made it clear that Flag is not a typical villain. He described the character as conflicted about apprehending Superman and increasingly cautious about the power dynamics among governments, corporations, and metahumans. Gunn has referred to the DCU as “one big story” that encompasses Salvation, Rick Flag, Lex, and Superman.

Salvation is the forested prison dimension where Flag imprisoned Peacemaker at the end of his season 2 arc. This has sparked fan theories about whether the sequel will revisit this setting, especially after a set photo of Nicholas Hoult by a lake ignited discussions about Lex’s fate.

The sequel to 2025’s ‘Superman’ is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027, with Gunn at the helm as writer and director. David Corenswet’s Superman must join forces with his nemesis Lex Luthor, portrayed by Hoult, to confront a much larger threat: the super-intelligent Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger.

Production has already wrapped up. Gunn announced that principal photography concluded after 93 days, one day longer than the first film, and he has confirmed that the assembly cut is complete while he is already working on his next project. Grillo finished his main filming in May but returned to Atlanta seven weeks later for additional scenes.

The cast is impressive, featuring Rachel Brosnahan reprising her role as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock returning as Supergirl, and Aaron Pierre joining as John Stewart. Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, and Edi Gathegi are also among the returning cast members.

Grillo’s farewell to the project was heartfelt. He expressed admiration for Gunn, praised Corenswet’s interpretation of Superman, and stated that the film is poised to be something extraordinary. His recent comments further suggest that there’s much more in store for his character.

With the first film grossing over $600 million globally and achieving an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the anticipation is high. A sequel featuring Superman, Lex, Brainiac, and a deepening DCU mythology, all with Flag Sr. involved, provides Gunn with ample material to expand upon.
