Few video games have tested the patience of fans quite like ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’. The release will come more than 13 years after ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ first debuted in September 2013. Every leak, rumor, and screenshot in between has been scrutinized, making the anticipation for new ‘GTA 6’ footage particularly intense.

Rockstar officially unveiled the game in December 2023, but it has faced two delays. Initially set for fall 2025, the release date was pushed to May 26, 2026, and then delayed again by six months. The company cited the need for additional time to polish the game to meet player expectations, which resulted in a roughly 7% drop in Take-Two shares following the announcement.

Now, the finish line is in sight. Rockstar has released the official launch trailer, a 90-second clip that outlines the plot and introduces players to protagonists Jason and Lucia. This trailer arrives just over a month before the game’s launch, marking the start of the final marketing push, with the release date confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, while a PC version is anticipated early next year.

The trailer begins with Jason discussing his military background before receiving a call from Lucia. We also see Lucia reaching out to Jason from jail, as their paths intertwine ahead of their shared adventure. One outlet noted the trailer’s strong ‘Thelma & Louise’ inspiration.

The action escalates rapidly from there. Clips showcase Jason in military action, Lucia jumping onto the landing gear of a moving plane, and both characters wreaking havoc throughout Leonida. A particularly steamy shower scene between the two adds to the excitement.

The official description raises the stakes. An easy heist goes awry, plunging the duo into the darker side of the sunniest place in America, caught in a criminal conspiracy that spans Leonida. They must depend on each other more than ever to survive.

However, not everyone found groundbreaking revelations in the trailer. One outlet described it as a cinematic preview typical of Rockstar’s launch trailers, featuring new footage but lacking significant plot reveals. For a trailer designed to generate hype without spoiling the story, this approach may be intentional.

Rockstar confirmed that the trailer was captured entirely in-game on a PlayStation 5. For a game of this scale, it’s a bold way to showcase what players can expect on launch day.

The music featured is another highlight. The trailer introduces “Flower in a Hurricane” from original score composers Justice, featuring Tame Impala, SZA, and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. This track is also included in ‘Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album’, the official soundtrack, which is available for pre-save on streaming platforms and pre-order on vinyl or CD.

The trailer reinforces what Rockstar has teased for months. It emphasizes Jason and Lucia’s relationship and their criminal exploits, providing a deeper look at Vice City and its surroundings. Vice City serves as the Miami-inspired hotspot, while Leonida represents the Florida-inspired state surrounding it.

This pairing is a first for the series, as Lucia is the first female protagonist in a mainline 3D ‘Grand Theft Auto’. Rockstar has hinted that players will be able to switch between her and Jason during missions. Building their relationship is a significant aspect of the game, although players can also choose to have them break up while still committing crimes together.

Confidence from the top has remained steady. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed strong confidence in the current release date, while acknowledging the inherent risks of delays. The release of a full launch trailer so close to the launch date is the clearest indication yet that the schedule is intact.

Looking ahead, studio heads Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut informed Bloomberg that there won’t be another eight-year gap between ‘GTA 6’ and Rockstar’s next title. This should provide some reassurance to fans who have waited so long for this installment.
