Few venues are as fitting for a film centered on community theater as a Lincoln Center premiere. The glamour is palpable, the audience consists of film enthusiasts, and the entire evening feels like a grand curtain call. Halle Bailey, whose journey has taken her from pop duo to Disney princess and now to ensemble comedy, was part of this enchanting night.

‘The Debut’ marks Jesse Eisenberg’s latest endeavor as writer-director, following his Oscar-nominated film ‘A Real Pain’. The story revolves around Mona Friedman, a reserved New Jersey housewife portrayed by Julianne Moore, who lands a minor role in a local musical. As she immerses herself in the role, she transforms into an obsessive method actor, leading to conflicts with the show’s overbearing director, played by Paul Giamatti.

The film premiered in New York at Alice Tully Hall on October 7, with Bailey making a stunning entrance that turned heads. According to the festival’s announcement, this was her inaugural appearance at the New York Film Festival.

Bailey dazzled in a sleek black one-shoulder gown featuring an asymmetrical neckline and a fitted, leather-style bodice. A draped fabric cascaded diagonally across the front, complemented by a high leg slit that added fluidity to her movements. She paired the look with strappy black heels, maintaining a cohesive palette.

Her hair flowed down in loose, twisted curls, accessorized with hoop earrings and a soft, radiant makeup look. The all-black ensemble was a bold choice, allowing the silhouette to take center stage, while the deep green backdrop of the NYFF provided a striking contrast for photographs.

Bailey was joined by an impressive lineup, including Eisenberg, Moore, and Giamatti, alongside cast members Bernadette Peters, Havana Rose Liu, and Eldar Isgandarov. Producer Emma Stone attended with her husband Dave McCary, along with Ali Herting, who co-produced the film through their Fruit Tree banner. Claire Danes was also spotted among the attendees.

The screening received a warm reception, with Variety reporting that the audience responded with laughter and applause. Eisenberg described his film as “tonally odd” while praising Moore, for whom he crafted the role.

In ‘The Debut’, Bailey portrays Stef, the charismatic lead in the show-within-the-film. An early review highlighted her strong performance amid a cast of committed supporting actors. The musical that Mona stumbles into is an entirely original creation, crafted specifically for the film, with production taking place at the Brook Art Center in Bound Brook, New Jersey, to evoke a small-town theater atmosphere.

The ensemble cast is diverse, featuring Colton Ryan, Cara Buono, Craig Bierko, and Bernadette Peters, blending talents from both film and Broadway. For Bailey, whose music career runs parallel to her acting, a musical comedy like this seems like a natural progression.

‘The Debut’ is set to hit theaters on December 11. Prior to that, it will screen at the Hamptons International Film Festival on October 9 and will close the BFI London Film Festival on October 18. Early festival buzz has already positioned Moore as a contender for awards season.

Bailey has an exciting lineup ahead as well. She has the comedy ‘You, Me & Tuscany’ scheduled for 2026, and her debut album, ‘Love Or Something Like It’, launched with nearly 800K streams on Spotify. She has also shared insights on relying on a supportive community of women while balancing her career and life as a single mother.

If the premiere is any indication, Bailey is poised to embrace a more diverse phase of her career. With a standout moment on the red carpet and a role in one of the fall’s most anticipated comedies, the timing couldn’t be more perfect.
