London experienced a red carpet event like no other recently. With a mix of royal attendees, a cast filled with awards-season frontrunners, and one of Tom Cruise’s most talked-about performances, the world premiere of ‘Digger’ in Leicester Square was a cultural spectacle. It served as a reminder of the immense star power that can converge for a film when the timing aligns perfectly.

The film, ‘Digger,’ directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, marks a significant moment in Cruise’s career and was showcased as a Royal Film Performance attended by Prince William and Princess Catherine. The guest list was extensive, featuring not just the film’s cast but also a number of notable personalities, including one familiar face that caught the attention of fans.

That standout figure was Hannah Waddingham, who dazzled in a sparkly black strapless gown alongside her partner, Nick Beresford-Cleary. Although Waddingham is not part of ‘Digger’s’ cast, her appearance made sense due to her previous collaboration with Cruise on the set of ‘Mission: Impossible 8,’ where she has spoken fondly of their working relationship.

Waddingham was not the only notable attendee that evening. The core cast of ‘Digger’ was present, including Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons, along with other guests like Salma Hayek, Emma D’Arcy, Sophie Wilde, J.J. Abrams, and Jodie Turner-Smith. Prince William and Princess Catherine greeted Cruise and Iñárritu first on the carpet before meeting the rest of the cast, with Iñárritu escorting Prince William and Cruise escorting Princess Catherine down the line, as reported by Deadline.

The premiere was filled with memorable moments beyond the fashion highlights. Cruise took to the stage to introduce the film, expressing that he had “never seen anything like it,” while Iñárritu humorously teased Cruise during his remarks, joking about the actor’s relentless positivity, which elicited genuine laughter from Cruise.

For those unfamiliar with ‘Digger,’ the film features Cruise as Digger Rockwell, an oil tycoon who must prove he is humanity’s savior before the environmental disaster caused by his own company leads to catastrophe. This project has been in development with Iñárritu for seven years and was filmed in VistaVision, showcasing the director’s penchant for ambitious filmmaking.

Cruise underwent a significant physical transformation for his role, utilizing prosthetics that took hours to apply each day. ‘Digger’ is scheduled for release in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on October 2, following an earlier international rollout starting September 30, allowing audiences globally to experience the film that generated such red carpet excitement.

In addition to Cruise, the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, with the screenplay co-written by Iñárritu alongside Oscar winners Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman. The story credit is shared by Berman, Iñárritu, and Jez Butterworth. Producer Mary Parent collaborated with Cruise and Iñárritu to oversee the project, which has already sparked polarized early critical reactions as it heads toward its wide release.

Regardless of the critics’ final verdict on ‘Digger,’ its London premiere exemplified the star-studded spectacle that studios aspire to achieve when launching a major fall release. With royal guests, a packed cast, and surprise appearances like Waddingham’s to support Cruise, the night underscored the anticipation surrounding this unique project.
