IMAX has reported a decrease in both revenue and profit for the first quarter of 2026, despite several blockbuster films drawing audiences to its premium screens.

The company generated approximately $81 million in the quarter ending March, down from $86.7 million during the same period last year. Net income also saw a decline, falling to $6.2 million from $8.2 million a year prior. Although these results were slightly better than Wall Street’s expectations, overall performance was lower compared to 2025.

A significant factor in this decline was a weaker global box office compared to last year’s robust results in China. In 2025, the Chinese blockbuster ‘Ne Zha 2’ delivered substantial earnings for IMAX, but this year, no single film reached that level of success.

Nonetheless, IMAX experienced strong performances from several major releases. Films like ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ and ‘Project Hail Mary’ did particularly well on IMAX screens, along with other titles like ‘Pegasus 3’ and ‘Scream 7’ contributing to the quarter’s results.

‘Project Hail Mary’ was especially notable, having been filmed with IMAX cameras and earning around $92 million globally from IMAX screenings alone, which constituted a significant portion of its total box office.

IMAX CFO Natasha Fernandes highlighted the film’s strong performance while discussing the results. She stated, “The breakout success of ‘Project Hail Mary’ — a Filmed For Imax release that more than doubled our initial box office projections — demonstrates what a well-crafted blockbuster can achieve when it leans fully into the Imax platform.”

She also mentioned that the company anticipates more strong releases in the future, with several major films scheduled to utilize IMAX technology.

For the quarter, the total global IMAX box office reached $260 million, reflecting a 13% decline from the same time last year. This drop is primarily attributed to the lack of a significant breakout hit like last year’s Chinese box office leader.

Despite this decline, IMAX remains optimistic about the year ahead, expecting record global box office totals driven by upcoming blockbusters.

Company CEO Rich Gelfond also provided a health update during the report, mentioning his recovery from pneumonia and gradual return to work. He stated, “My recovery from pneumonia is progressing well. I have been discharged from the hospital and will continue to focus on my health in the coming weeks.”

He confirmed that he is resuming leadership duties while the management team continues to handle day-to-day operations.

This report underscores IMAX’s reliance on a few major global releases to enhance results each quarter. Even strong films may not suffice if there is no massive breakout hit like in previous years. What are your thoughts on IMAX’s performance this quarter and its outlook for the future?
