Karl Urban Discusses Chronic Illness During Filming of ‘The Boys’ Finale
Karl Urban has shared insights about a challenging period during the filming of the final season of The Boys, revealing that he faced a serious illness while shooting one of the show’s most intense scenes. The actor discussed his experience at a Denver FanExpo panel, with fan recordings from the event circulating online.
Urban mentioned that the demanding final battle scenes were physically exhausting even under normal circumstances, but he was struggling significantly at that time.
He explained, “I mean it was you know physically quite a taxing fight to do (Homelander vs Butcher) I was actually chronically ill at the time. I had some nasty flu and I didn’t tell the producer this but I would go home and cough up blood. Uh I was not well.”
His remarks provide fans with a new perspective on the production of the finale, which features one of the most violent and emotionally charged confrontations in the series.
The final episode of The Boys showcases a significant showdown between Butcher and Homelander inside the Oval Office, where Homelander attempts to declare himself a god on live television. The situation escalates into chaos as the rest of the team arrives to intervene.
A pivotal moment in the battle occurs when Kimiko unleashes a specially designed radiation blast that strips a Supe of their powers. This attack successfully renders Homelander completely vulnerable for the first time.
With Homelander powerless and terrified, Butcher intervenes and ends the fight, killing him on live television. This moment signifies the conclusion of their long-standing conflict.
However, this victory does not bring peace to Butcher. The aftermath reveals him emotionally shattered after being rejected by Ryan, who chooses to walk away. Additionally, Butcher suffers the loss of his dog, Terror, further deepening his emotional turmoil.
In the final act of the story, Butcher resolves to proceed with a perilous plan involving a Supe-killing virus. He attempts to release it through Vought Tower’s sprinkler system, which could lead to a global catastrophe.
Hughie arrives to try and stop him, leading to a final confrontation. Butcher hesitates at the last moment, but Hughie ultimately shoots him. Before dying, Butcher reassures Hughie that he would not have stopped, affirming that his actions were necessary.

Urban’s revelations about filming the finale while battling a serious illness add a new dimension to the already intense production narrative surrounding the series. Fans have expressed strong reactions to both the emotional weight of the ending and the physical toll it took on the cast to bring it to life, as shared during the FanExpo panel.
