Keri Russell is a well-known presence on late-night television, and her comfort level is evident each time she takes a seat in the guest chair. Her latest visit to ‘The Tonight Show’ comes at an ideal time, just days before her flagship Netflix drama returns. Fans of Kate Wyler’s high-stakes diplomacy couldn’t ask for better timing.

The series has cultivated a dedicated following by blending political intrigue with complex, messy relationships. Now, it is preparing for what promises to be its most perilous chapter yet, with the press tour in full swing.

Russell appeared on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ to discuss the new season of ‘The Diplomat’, marking her 10th appearance on the show. Photos from the evening capture her in a stunning black, high-neck dress with voluminous sleeves and a gathered skirt, paired with black strappy heels. She posed in front of the show’s blue logo wall and later relaxed on the guest couch with the New York skyline glowing behind her.

This long-standing relationship has become a staple of her promotional efforts. Each visit allows her to hint at what’s ahead without revealing the major twists.

The fourth season of ‘The Diplomat’ is set to premiere globally on Thursday, Oct. 15, with all eight hour-long episodes available at once on Netflix. The streamer has already shared a teaser trailer, first-look images, and a synopsis. The series is rated TV-MA and falls within the drama and thriller genres.

Debora Cahn serves as the creator and showrunner, with Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Russell, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie among the executive producers. Filming took place in London, Washington, D.C., New York, and Lucca, Italy, expanding the show’s global narrative.

The story resumes in the aftermath of the previous season’s conclusion, where President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler began covertly working to seize a Russian nuclear submarine’s doomsday weapon. Netflix’s synopsis indicates that “two marriages threaten to eat each other alive,” and a pivotal moment disrupts the US-UK peace that Kate brokered. As Kate grapples with her own faltering marriage, she teams up with First Gentleman Todd Penn, an uneasy alliance, to prevent Grace and Hal from pushing the country toward war.

At its core, this season explores themes of trust and betrayal at the highest levels. Kate discovers she has been double-crossed and must ally with an unlikely partner to restore stability, all while the personal and political stakes continue to escalate.

In a recent interview with Extra, Russell mentioned that the new season picks up right where the last one ended and expressed her love for how it concludes. She described a dynamic power struggle between Kate and Hal that keeps evolving. When asked if love and power can coexist, she replied, “Maybe not all at once.”

Her co-star Rufus Sewell noted that the finale of the previous season portrays Hal as having engaged in something dangerous and deceptive, and the new episodes delve into his motivations. This promise of deeper context should reassure viewers who were left shocked by the last cliffhanger, hinting at a more nuanced portrayal of a character whose intentions have kept audiences guessing.

Russell stars as Kate Wyler, alongside Sewell as Hal Wyler. Allison Janney plays President Grace Penn, and Bradley Whitford portrays Todd Penn. Nana Mensah returns as Billie Appiah and is now a series regular.

The ensemble cast also includes Ato Essandoh and Ali Ahn, along with Rory Kinnear as Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge. With Janney and Whitford at the center of the plot, the season appears poised to explore the power dynamics among its central couples.

Russell also took the opportunity in the interview to celebrate Matthew Rhys’s recent wins at the Emmys for his roles in ‘Widow’s Bay’ and ‘The Beast in Me’. She exclaimed, “We were so screaming for him.” This celebratory spirit adds an extra layer of goodwill as the series approaches its next chapter.

With the premiere just around the corner, fans can expect more promotional appearances and teasers from the cast. The countdown for viewers is almost over.
