Voices that accompany a global sensation often remain in the shadows. For some time, the talents behind ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ were primarily recognized through their animated counterparts. However, Rei Ami’s striking appearance at the VMAs showcased her readiness to step into the limelight.

Ami lends her voice to Zoey in Netflix’s ‘KPop Demon Hunters,’ portraying the rapper of the fictional K-pop group HUNTR/X. The group’s hit single “Golden” reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and garnered a Song of the Year nomination at this year’s event, making her blue carpet entrance one of the most eagerly awaited moments.

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards unfolded on Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Ami made a bold statement in an all-black sheer outfit designed by Hilá, which garnered over 1.7 million views on Pop Crave’s post. The ensemble featured intricate leaf-like appliqué details.

It included a structured bra-style top with delicate straps and layers of black embellishments that traced her figure. The matching sheer trousers created a captivating illusion effect, while the back showcased criss-crossing straps and an open design, enhancing the overall drama.

Fashion critics quickly praised the outfit’s construction. Red Carpet Fashion Awards noted that while the look reveals much, the layered embellishments prevent it from appearing completely nude. Other outlets described a beaded, web-like design cascading over a low-rise skirt.

Her accessories added a touch of glamour. She adorned herself with Hoorsenbuhs white-gold and diamond jewelry, complemented by multiple silver bracelets, rings, and layered necklaces, topped off with a chunky choker. Black high heels completed her stunning styling.

Her beauty look was equally captivating. Ami styled her dark hair in a messy, voluminous updo, with long bangs sweeping across her forehead for a slightly undone vibe. Dramatic black eyeliner, glowing skin, and a neutral lip completed her makeup.

The overall effect was gothic yet light, perfectly aligning with a carpet filled with lace, corsetry, and sheer gowns, fitting seamlessly into one of the evening’s recurring themes.

Ami’s fashion choices have consistently leaned towards the darker side. At the 2025 VMAs, she donned a black fringe miniskirt paired with a heavy belt and a cropped black top, mostly concealed by a fuzzy burgundy wrap. The trio’s looks that year were characterized as pop goth.

At the 2026 Critics Choice Awards, she opted for a cutout floor-length black gown featuring a thigh-high leg slit. At the Golden Globes, she coordinated with her fellow singers in black, with her corset gown by Valdrin Sahiti receiving accolades for its femme-fatale allure. This year’s VMAs look continued that trend with an even bolder twist.

Online reactions were overwhelmingly positive. One fan humorously noted that Zoey was ready to hunt both demons and the red carpet, while another expressed surprise at the demon hunters’ stylish flair. The comments highlighted how closely intertwined the film’s characters have become with the real-life voices behind them.

Ami also participated in the fun on the carpet. Billboard featured her in a video where she remarked on the iconic nature of Lady Gaga’s meat dress and shared her favorite Taylor Swift music video. Another Billboard “pass the mic” video showcased stars including Tyla, Slayyyter, and FLO engaging in playful questions.

Although the night did not end with a win for HUNTR/X, as BTS took home the trophy for “Swim,” the lead single from their album ‘Arirang,’ Ami’s red carpet moment proved that the ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ era still has plenty of life.

With a new single released and the film continuing to thrive, her solo career appears to be just beginning. Embracing her identity as an artist suits her, and her look was as fearless as her music.
