Netflix’s ‘Man on Fire’ has just released its full first season, and discussions are already underway about the potential return of John Creasy. Star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has shared his thoughts, expressing both enthusiasm and caution regarding the future of the character.

In an interview with ScreenRant, the actor mentioned that he could envision himself portraying the character for an extended period, but emphasized the importance of prioritizing quality.

“Could be him for a long time,” he stated. “Yeah, I actually have thought about it, which means that you got to find a good reason to do it, and you got to really, at least, like it. I always have to love everything I do, but you’ve got to at least like it. And this John Creasy is an incredible character. This has been an amazing opportunity, and who knows what’s going to happen with it? I don’t really find it beneficial to myself to think about that so much. But I’m excited about what we’ve made thus far, and excited to put that out into the world. And anything else happens, we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it” he said.

While Netflix has yet to officially announce a second season, the show has performed impressively, ranking as the number one title on the platform in 46 countries within just two days of its release.

Critics have had mixed reactions, with the series holding a 55 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 20 reviews. While Abdul-Mateen II’s performance received praise, some critiques were directed at the pacing and plausibility of the story. In contrast, audience scores reflect a more favorable view, sitting at 73 percent on the same platform.

The season finale leaves ample room for a sequel, concluding with a CIA director presenting Creasy with a lead on the events that transpired in Mexico City, suggesting that a second season could explore this storyline further. The first season drew inspiration from both Quinnell’s original 1980 novel and its 1992 sequel ‘The Perfect Kill’, with three additional books in the series available for adaptation.

Netflix initially greenlit the adaptation in March 2023, with Abdul-Mateen II joining the project in June 2024 and filming beginning later that year, which included a brief production halt due to an injury he sustained on set in Mexico City. The series was created and written by Kyle Killen, with ‘Creed II’ director Steven Caple Jr. directing the first two episodes.

This marks Abdul-Mateen II’s second series premiere this year, following the January launch of ‘Wonder Man’ on Disney Plus, which has already been renewed for a second season. The future of ‘Man on Fire’ will likely hinge on viewing figures in the coming weeks, as Netflix typically makes renewal decisions within one to two months post-release.
