‘Marshals’ Showrunner Discusses Kayce’s Biggest Fear After Premiere’s Tragic Twist

Few network dramas face the kind of pressure that ‘Marshals’ is currently experiencing. The ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff returned to CBS as the top scripted show in broadcast, tasked with resolving numerous cliffhangers from its inaugural season.

The season premiere, “All Hat No Cattle,” aired on October 4 and kicked off a 20-episode journey. With the first season averaging 19.3 million multiplatform viewers per episode, it was the #1 new show of the year, leading to high expectations for a premiere that needed to save Tate and address several unresolved plotlines.

Showrunner Spencer Hudnut has shared insights about the episode’s emotional weight and what lies ahead. He revealed that Kayce’s greatest fear is that Tate will attempt to follow in his footsteps, a concern that is poised to create significant tension between father and son this season.

Hudnut explained to TheWrap that “All Hat No Cattle” was the most challenging episode he has had to break, as the writers found themselves in a difficult position. He praised the writers’ room for their collaborative efforts in resolving the narrative.

The death of Dolly (Ellyn Jameson) has sparked considerable discussion among fans. Hudnut initially believed that Dolly was complicit in her father’s scheme, but as production concluded, it became clear that she was more innocent than anticipated. Her ignorance of Tom Weaver’s plan rendered her fate even more tragic.

He also mentioned that the writers saw a potential deeper connection between Dolly and Kayce, given their backgrounds of dysfunctional families and flawed fathers. The narrative had to either bring them closer together or find ways to keep them apart. Ultimately, he noted that anything Kayce grows close to tends to be taken from him.

In a dramatic turn, Tom and Dolly drove off a cliff while fleeing from Kayce, resulting in Dolly’s death. According to Hudnut, the writers felt that Tom needed to face the ultimate consequence, and his daughter’s death served as the most severe punishment they could inflict.

The episode concludes with Kayce and Tate back in their devastated home, where Tate reminds his father that he will soon turn 18. This moment sets the stage for the season’s central narrative, as Kayce realizes he has limited time to guide his son onto the right path.

Hudnut noted that in Monica’s absence, Kayce has taken on the roles of protector and provider, while Monica has been the nurturing parent. Kayce has always felt insecure in his parenting role, making this season about how he will assist Tate in finding his direction. He also pointed out that what Monica envisioned for Tate contrasts sharply with the path Kayce has traveled.

Tate has endured significant trauma, including the loss of his mother and multiple abductions. Hudnut hinted that Tate will attempt to ensure such events never recur, which will manifest in ways that are both alarming and somewhat frightening to Kayce. The choices Tate makes will likely surprise many viewers, he added.

Hudnut shared with Front Row Features that the show does not aim to revisit Kayce’s feelings about his father, John, as ‘Yellowstone’ has already addressed that. Instead, the season’s key question is, “What path will Tate discover this year?”

The story will progress swiftly following the premiere, as the writers want viewers to feel the repercussions, including Kayce’s guilt and his worries about Tate. Belle, who narrowly escaped serious injury, will confront the aftermath at home, where her son begins to recognize the dangers associated with her job.

Cal and Belle, who shared their first kiss midway through Season 1, will explore their evolving feelings, with Cal facing vulnerabilities regarding his health. Andrea’s decision to remain with the team instead of returning to her previous job will also stir up unresolved issues from Season 1. Hudnut promised more developments for Rainwater and the Broken Rock storylines, including challenges that threaten his position.
