Marvel’s ‘Zodiac’ Could Bring Back ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Characters Report Claims
Marvel enthusiasts have continually wondered about the fate of the ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ team since the series concluded in 2020, leaving its characters absent from the broader franchise.
A new Marvel Television project is reigniting those hopes, with a recent report adding fuel to the fire.
During New York Comic Con on October 8, Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum unveiled ‘Zodiac’, a live-action spy thriller set to premiere on Disney+ in 2028. This marks the first new live-action Marvel series announced since ‘Ironheart’ debuted last year.
Filming is scheduled to commence in London in spring 2027, with casting expected to begin in the coming weeks. So far, Marvel has kept details under wraps, revealing little beyond the title and a preliminary logo, with no cast, plot, episode count, or release date disclosed.
This secrecy has opened the door for speculation. An insider report suggests that some characters from ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ may make a return in ‘Zodiac’. However, Marvel has yet to confirm any connections, so this should be viewed as a rumor for the time being.
Fans are understandably excited about the possibility. The new logo features a wheel design that includes what appears to be an eagle in the letter A, which many interpret as a nod to the S.H.I.E.L.D. emblem. Additionally, another insider pointed out the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo in the title art, asserting that ‘Zodiac’ is the official title and not merely a production codename.

The title also has significant comic book origins. The Zodiac cartel first appeared in ‘Avengers’ #72 in 1970, featuring twelve supervillain leaders, each representing a zodiac sign.
Later, writer Jonathan Hickman introduced the Great Wheel, a covert organization of spymasters established by a time-traveling Leonardo da Vinci. This group included S.H.I.E.L.D. members Nick Fury, Dum Dum Dugan, and John Garrett, alongside members of Hydra and the Hand. Winderbaum himself encouraged comic readers to search for clues in the logo, although Marvel has not confirmed which version will be utilized in the show.
Fans have noted that Clark Gregg, who portrayed Phil Coulson, shared the ‘Zodiac’ announcement on his Instagram Stories. Some interpreted this as a potential hint at Coulson’s return, while others cautioned it might simply be a reaction to the news.
There has also been a strong demand for Chloe Bennet’s Daisy Johnson, known as Quake, to return. One reply to Marvel’s announcement simply stated welcome back daisy johnson, while another inquired about Daisy’s possible comeback.
A practical consideration is the current status of S.H.I.E.L.D. within the MCU. Officially, the organization no longer exists and has been supplanted by S.W.O.R.D. Some argue that this makes for a more compelling setting for a spy narrative, as a secret organization operates best when it is officially nonexistent.
‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ aired for seven seasons, concluding in 2020. Its main cast included Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, and Elizabeth Henstridge, with Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, and Jeffrey Bell serving as showrunners.
‘Zodiac’ is set to debut as Marvel redefines its approach to small-screen content. ‘VisionQuest’, starring Paul Bettany as Vision, premieres on Disney+ on October 14, wrapping up the storyline that began with ‘WandaVision’.
‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is slated to conclude next year, potentially leading to a Defenders reunion. Meanwhile, ‘Wonder Man’ was canceled just months after its January premiere. Given this backdrop, a new spy series with an established legacy audience seems like a wise move.
At this point, almost everything regarding ‘Zodiac’ remains unverified. Marvel has not clarified whether it will connect to the broader MCU or if it is intended as a limited series or the start of a longer narrative.
The upcoming weeks should provide more clarity, as casting is about to commence. If any stars from ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ are involved, a casting announcement would serve as a clear indication.
