Marvel enthusiasts have an insatiable appetite for Easter eggs, always eager to trace their origins. Whenever a new project is unveiled, fans scour through years of films, shorts, and comics for hidden clues. The latest announcement from Marvel is already prompting viewers to revisit a short film from 2013.

The studio’s live-action television lineup has seen some changes. ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is set to conclude with its third season, ‘Wonder Man’ was recently canceled after its January premiere, and ‘VisionQuest’ is scheduled to debut on October 14, wrapping up the ‘WandaVision’ trilogy. In this context, any new live-action series garners significant attention.

This is why Marvel Television’s reveal of ‘Zodiac’ at New York Comic Con has generated such buzz, particularly one detail that has gone viral. Fans have pointed out that the name “Zodiac” was previously mentioned in the ‘Agent Carter’ Marvel One-Shot, where Peggy Carter is tasked with retrieving a dangerous substance known as Zodiac. This raises the question: was Marvel planting seeds for this project all along?

Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum announced ‘Zodiac’ on October 8 as a live-action spy thriller set to stream on Disney+ in 2028. Production is slated to commence in London in spring 2027, with casting expected to begin shortly. Beyond this, Winderbaum has kept details under wraps, emphasizing that much remains a secret.

The Hollywood Reporter first broke news of the project last month in a report discussing the end of ‘Daredevil: Born Again.’ This marks the first new live-action Marvel series announced since ‘Ironheart’ premiered in June 2025. As of now, no cast, showrunner, or plot details have been confirmed.

The one-shot, which debuted in 2013 on the ‘Iron Man 3’ Blu-ray, is set in 1946, a year after ‘Captain America: The First Avenger.’ Peggy Carter, portrayed by Hayley Atwell, finds herself stuck with administrative tasks at the Strategic Scientific Reserve. One evening, she receives a call directing her to the location of the “Zodiac.”

While some fans claim she was “sent” on a mission, the reality is a bit different. Carter acts independently, without her boss’s approval, battling through guards to recover a vial of serum, only to face reprimand the following day for bypassing protocol. The short was so well received that it led to the ABC series ‘Agent Carter,’ which aired from 2015 to 2016.

Speculation abounds that the Zodiac serum might be linked to an unknown substance or even a remnant of Steve Rogers’ Super-Soldier Serum. However, this remains purely theoretical. In the one-shot, Zodiac is characterized as a perilous serum or virus, with no direct ties to Rogers’ transformation.

It’s important to note that Marvel has not confirmed any connection between the new series and the one-shot. The studio has yet to clarify whether the show continues an existing storyline or introduces something entirely new that merely shares the name. For now, the connection exists as an intriguing piece of fan speculation rather than established canon.

Other clues suggest a different narrative direction. The “A” in the ‘Zodiac’ logo reportedly features a small eagle head, reminiscent of the S.H.I.E.L.D. emblem, leading many to theorize a connection to the spy agency. Clark Gregg, who portrayed Phil Coulson, also shared the announcement on Instagram, but this was merely a repost and not an indication of his involvement.

IGN has suggested that the show is likely to focus on S.H.I.E.L.D., but this is based on inference rather than official word from Marvel. The show is not yet listed in the “MCU Complete Timeline” on Disney+, leaving its place in official continuity uncertain. Marvel has also not disclosed a specific setting.

In Marvel Comics, Zodiac is a criminal organization with members named after astrological signs, with leadership rotating monthly. Various groups have used the name over the years, including a version formed by Thanos. Some outlets speculate that the MCU may adhere to the original concept, potentially making the series one of Marvel’s first to center around a villainous group.

Regardless of the truth, the name carries significant history, and the ‘Agent Carter’ connection adds an intriguing layer. With casting about to commence, fans may receive answers before the 2028 premiere.
