Michael Douglas Reveals Unexpected Rival While Winning Over Catherine Zeta-Jones
Hollywood love stories often become complicated, especially when a memoir is involved. Michael Douglas has always been open about the tumultuous aspects of his life. His new book, ‘One Helluva Ride’, was released on Oct. 6 by Grand Central Publishing and delves into his journey from being Kirk Douglas’s son to becoming a Hollywood icon. It also offers fans an intimate look at how he won the heart of Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Their relationship has stood the test of time. Douglas has shared that he first fell for Zeta-Jones after seeing her in ‘The Mask of Zorro’, long before they met. They were introduced in 1998 at the Deauville American Film Festival in France, thanks to matchmakers Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith.
What Douglas didn’t anticipate was facing competition. In his memoir, he reveals that he had an unexpected rival in basketball legend Kobe Bryant, who lived nearby Zeta-Jones in Pacific Palisades and frequently found reasons to visit her. Douglas humorously notes that Bryant seemed to lose his dog quite often, though he’s unsure how many times that actually happened.
At that time, Douglas and Zeta-Jones were in a long-distance relationship, with him in New York and her in Los Angeles. Zeta-Jones was also traveling frequently for work, which meant she wasn’t always home. Bryant, then in his early 20s, had not yet met his future wife, Vanessa.
Zeta-Jones has confirmed her side of the story in a heartfelt way. After Bryant’s tragic passing in January 2020, she shared an Instagram tribute reminiscing about their time as neighbors in Pacific Palisades about 24 years prior. She recalled their first meeting when his dog wandered into her garden and how she could watch him practice on his private basketball court from her home.
Her account aligns perfectly with Douglas’s, adding a layer of tenderness to what is otherwise a humorous anecdote. The tragic loss of Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, in a helicopter crash has changed how many people perceive this story.
Douglas has never shied away from admitting that his pursuit of Zeta-Jones was bold. During a 2018 appearance on ‘On Air With Ryan Seacrest’, he recounted that on their first night together, he discovered they shared a birthday and that she loved golf. He even told her he would be the father of her children, a line he later deemed a bit presumptuous.
The memoir also sheds light on why he moved quickly in their relationship. Reports from the LA Times indicate that Douglas recognized his playboy reputation and ended relationships with five women around the time his romance with Zeta-Jones became public. He described himself as a changed man after they began building a family.
The timeline supports this. Douglas proposed on New Year’s Eve in 1999, and they wed on Nov. 18, 2000, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Their son, Dylan, was born in August 2000, followed by their daughter, Carys, in April 2003.
‘One Helluva Ride’ has its own story. TheWrap reported that the book almost missed its publication date due to a lengthy legal review in the U.S. and England. Last-minute edits were necessary after private conversations with notable figures appeared in the text, and 80 previously unseen photos were added just in time.
The book was approved just moments before the deadline. Douglas received a multimillion-dollar advance, and foreign rights were sold in 25 countries. In addition to his love story, he discusses films like ‘The China Syndrome’, ‘Fatal Attraction’, ‘Falling Down’, and ‘Behind the Candelabra’, along with his first marriage, infidelity, rehab, his son’s addiction, and his battle with stage IV cancer.
This anecdote resonates because it is so relatable. Douglas, a seasoned leading man, was competing from afar with a young superstar living practically next door. Instead of viewing it as a threat, he shares it with a sense of humor.
It also reflects the couple’s long history of finding laughter in difficult times. They briefly separated in 2013 but reunited in 2014, celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary in November 2025. Douglas has expressed that he never lost hope for their reconciliation, and they now seem to be in a good place.
For readers, the Bryant story offers a rare glimpse into a time when everyone involved was young, ambitious, and still navigating their lives. It’s humorous, slightly poignant, and quintessentially Hollywood.
