Milly Alcock Shares Moody Black-and-White Portraits After ‘Supergirl’ Summer
Milly Alcock has had an eventful year. The breakout star of ‘House of the Dragon’ took center stage in ‘Supergirl,’ the second film in the DC Universe lineup, which premiered in theaters on June 26 under the direction of Craig Gillespie. Following the film’s release, she embarked on a global promotional tour that spanned from Rio de Janeiro to London.
The film’s box office performance was more complex than its debut. ‘Supergirl’ opened with $38 million domestically and $68 million globally, falling short of studio expectations. DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran stated that the film is part of a broader, long-term strategy that the studio remains optimistic about.
Beyond the box office discussions, Alcock is back in the limelight with a different kind of imagery. The actress recently shared a series of photos on Instagram, showcasing her in one image with her long blond hair cascading across her face, and in another, she stands against a softly blurred backdrop, both dressed in a black top with a ruffled front.

Alcock’s rise to the role of Kara Zor-El has been swift. She gained recognition as the young Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first season of ‘House of the Dragon,’ a performance that earned her a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination. She later appeared in the Netflix series ‘Sirens’ before securing the role of Supergirl.
Her first appearance as the character was an uncredited cameo in 2025’s ‘Superman,’ which grossed $618 million worldwide. ‘Supergirl’ then gave her the lead role, and many have noted that she was a standout even as the film faced challenges. Reports indicate she received praise for her performance despite the mixed reviews surrounding the movie.
The financial figures have been hard to overlook. The film reportedly had a budget of around $170 million before marketing, and Variety projected it might struggle to reach a lifetime gross of approximately $100 million domestically. This presents a significant challenge for a lead actress in her first major film role.

Alcock has been open about the pressures that come with such a high-profile role. She has discussed the immense stress she felt stepping into one of DC’s most significant characters, noting that her experience on ‘House of the Dragon’ taught her tough lessons regarding fan scrutiny. Initially, she vowed to avoid major franchises, but as auditions dwindled, she reconsidered her stance.
In this context, a simple collection of black-and-white portraits seems like a refreshing reset. After months filled with premieres, press tours, and box office discussions, these images reveal a more relaxed aspect of her public persona.
Her schedule remains busy. She is set to star in the dark comedy ‘Thumb,’ and was spotted on the New York set of the project last December. Additionally, one database lists her as returning as Kara in ‘Man of Tomorrow’ in 2027, suggesting that her journey as Supergirl is far from over.
This blend of high-budget superhero projects and smaller films suits an actress who has seamlessly transitioned between prestigious television, indie dramas, and blockbusters since her teenage years. Whatever lies ahead, the spotlight on her is unlikely to fade.
