Monster Hunter Wilds Reluctant to Add a New Weapon for a Good Reason

Monster Hunter has always given players a lot of ways to fight, with 14 different weapon types that all feel unique. This variety is a big part of the game, letting hunters pick the weapon that fits their style best.

Even with this large selection, people have wondered if Capcom would ever add a 15th weapon. Director Yuya Tokuda said the team talks about it often, but making a new weapon is harder than it sounds. It has to be different from everything else while still fitting into the game’s deep combat system. Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto also pointed out that creating a brand-new weapon takes a lot of time and effort. Because of this, the developers are choosing to improve the weapons that already exist instead of adding another one.

To make sure the current weapons feel fresh, Capcom is making major updates to four of them in Monster Hunter Wilds: the Insect Glaive, Switch Axe, Lance, and Sword & Shield. These changes are meant to make each weapon more fun to use and fix issues that players have noticed. For example, the Insect Glaive will have smoother combos and better transitions between attacks, along with the return of the Vaulting Dance move. Updates like these will help weapons feel more powerful and enjoyable in hunts.

Another tweak Capcom is working on is the “hitstop” effect, which is the brief pause that happens when a strong attack lands. This makes hits feel weighty and satisfying. Some players noticed that hitstop seemed weaker in the Monster Hunter Wilds beta, and Tokuda confirmed that the final version of the game will have stronger hitstop, especially for finishing moves.

Adding a new weapon might not be happening anytime soon, but Capcom is clearly focused on making sure the existing ones are better than ever. By refining what’s already there instead of starting from scratch, Monster Hunter Wilds is shaping up to be a more polished and exciting experience for longtime hunters and newcomers alike.
