‘NCIS: New York’ Series Episode 1 Premiere Recap & Ending Explained Why Sam Hanna Came Home
Every long-running franchise eventually faces the challenge of making a familiar character feel fresh again. ‘NCIS‘ has been tackling this for years, and its latest spinoff offers a new opportunity with one of its most dependable heroes. This recap of the ‘NCIS: New York’ premiere and its ending explores the case, the shootout, and the pivotal decision made at the conclusion. Spoilers ahead.
CBS greenlit the spinoff in April, bringing LL COOL J’s Sam Hanna back as a lead for the first time since ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ concluded after 14 seasons in 2023. Scott Caan co-stars as Nick Schaeffer, a rogue agent who becomes Sam’s partner, while Jennifer Beals joined the cast in July. The show airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on CBS, with the premiere debuting on October 6.
Interestingly, the pilot doesn’t kick off in New York. It begins in Dubai, where Sam takes down a group of criminals in a luxurious hotel while ignoring calls from a friend named Jack Halloway. After ensuring his safety, Sam returns the call, leaving an apologetic voicemail, but the audience already knows Jack is dead on a bench in Central Park.
Upon arriving at the NCIS New York field office, Sam informs supervisor Robyn Wells (Beals) that Jack was very close to him. He served alongside Jack’s father and has known him his entire life. While the NYPD rules it a suicide, Sam is skeptical, prompting Robyn to pair him with Nick, who was brought in on his day off.
Sam insists he’s only back for one case. He meets the rest of the team: Addy (Jacqueline Byers), Wyatt (Shane Harper), and tech expert Sean (Devin Druid), who is serving a punishment for hacking the police pension fund. Jimmy Palmer joins via Zoom and confirms Sam’s suspicion that Jack was murdered.
Jack, a tugboat captain, has a second bullet at the scene, indicating it wasn’t suicide. Sam and Nick investigate Jack’s boat, discovering a lockbox containing around seven grand in cash. A defensive Sam refuses to believe Jack could be involved in anything illicit, and Sean uncovers footage of a runner wearing a cap with an angry eel logo from a minor league team in Norfolk, Virginia.
The cap leads them to Jack’s first mate, Dave, who admits he was present when Jack died. An infrared camera on the boat reveals individuals jumping off an ocean liner and boarding, leading Nick to realize Jack wasn’t smuggling drugs but people. The passengers turn out to be mercenaries, and Dave planted the cash to frame Jack because they were holding his online girlfriend hostage, who ultimately proves to be a catfish.
The mercenaries’ real target is an NYU student, the daughter of a Russian mining oligarch, kidnapped for leverage against a rival. Sam and Nick lead a task force to an empty nightclub in Bushwick, resulting in an intense firefight. Sean uses surveillance cameras to direct Nick to an upstairs window, where he engages in hand-to-hand combat with a thug.
Sam shoots the man dead, saving Nick’s life. They successfully return the girl home, and Sam presents Jack’s widow, Janice, with an American flag as a tribute to his service.

The final scene encapsulates the heart of the pilot. Nick takes Sam to a location under a bridge and tells him, “This is where all the action is.” Sam feels like a stranger after being away for so long, but Nick understands: he attempted to escape his family’s legacy of cops and firefighters by entering finance, only to return, stating, “This is my home.”
Nick emphasizes that Sam is the best at what he does and expresses his desire to work with the best. With “Empire State of Mind” playing, Sam agrees to join the team, and the two head out for a meal.
Will Sam truly stay? Not necessarily, according to LL COOL J. He mentioned to TV Insider on the premiere red carpet that “there’s no guarantee he’ll stay.” This uncertainty adds some tension to the partnership moving forward.
Sam’s grief over his friend’s death is still raw, and he has been running for years. While Nick may have persuaded him to stay for the time being, the question lingers over the team.
