Netflix Reveals Clip from ‘Demon City’ Manga Live-Action Adaptation, Debuts Late February

On Saturday, Netflix shared a sneak peek of Demon City (known in Japan as Demon City Oni-Goroshi), a live-action adaptation of Masamichi Kawabe’s Oni-Goroshi manga. The clip features a fight scene with Shūhei Sakata, who takes down his enemies without saying a word. The film will be available globally on Netflix starting February 27.

The story follows Shūhei Sakata, who is accused of murdering his wife and child. After an attempt to end his life fails, he ends up in a prison hospital for 15 years, left physically disabled.

However, he later gets a second chance and recovers his abilities. Sakata then finds himself facing enemies connected to the Kimen-gumi, a secret organization controlling the town of Shinjō.

Toma Ikuta stars as Shūhei Sakata. Other cast members include Matsuya Onoe, Masahiro Higashide, Masanobu Takashima, and Miō Tanaka, who play members of the Kimen-gumi.

Onoe’s character, Ryū Sunohara, is the mayor of Shinjō and runs a resort with a casino. Higashide’s Kanta Fuse is a security head and a perverted man who has taken in Sakata’s daughter. Takashima plays detective Kōtarō Shinozuka, and Tanaka plays drug dealer Homare Takemoto.

Other key characters include Ami Tōma as Sakata’s daughter Ryō, Tarō Suruga as Sakata’s old friend Akira Fujita, and Mai Kiryū as his late wife Aoi. Naoto Takenaka portrays Haruo Kawano, head of the Kawano yakuza group, while Takuma Otō plays Yoshihito Takigawa, a local cop who deals in info.

Seiji Tanaka directs and writes the script for the film, which is produced by Amuse and Digital Frontier. Tomoyasu Hotei, known for his work on Kill Bill and Lupin III live-action, is composing the music.

The Oni-Goroshi manga, which Kawabe started in July 2020, ended in November 2024. Its final volume will be released on February 28.
