Netflix’s Red Sox Documentary, ‘The Clubhouse: A Year With the Red Sox,’ Confirms April Release Date

Get ready for a new behind-the-scenes look at the Boston Red Sox. The Clubhouse: A Year With the Red Sox is an eight-episode Netflix series that premieres on April 8. Directed by Emmy-winner Greg Whiteley, this docuseries follows the team throughout an entire season, offering fans a rare glimpse into the personal and professional lives of the players.

Whiteley, known for his work on shows like Cheer and Last Chance U, had full access to the Red Sox. This marks Netflix’s first time documenting a Major League Baseball team for an entire season.

The series provides a closer look at what it’s really like to play at the highest level, showing both the highs and the lows of life in the big leagues.

Whiteley explained that while baseball fans have seen groundouts countless times, it’s the access to players’ inner thoughts that makes these moments so powerful. ‘The sport is just the backdrop for capturing the personal struggles and triumphs that come with it,’ he said.

Filming began during the preseason and wrapped up after the season ended, which made for a challenging, and expensive, production. Whiteley joked that one-third of their budget was spent during spring training alone. Despite the difficulties, his team was dedicated to being ‘everywhere, all the time’ to capture the full experience of the season.

This isn’t the only Red Sox-related project at Netflix. The Comeback, which is currently streaming, takes a look at the team’s legendary 2004 season and their incredible comeback.

For The Clubhouse, however, Whiteley focused on the team 20 years later. It’s clear that Netflix is looking to dive even deeper into the lives of MLB players, as other teams have already reached out about similar projects.

Fans of the Red Sox—and anyone curious about what goes on behind the scenes in baseball—won’t want to miss this intimate look at the sport.
