New Ryu Poster Sparks Excitement Among ‘Street Fighter’ Fans
‘Street Fighter’ has been steadily unveiling character reveals, trailers, and behind-the-scenes glimpses as its theatrical release approaches, and the promotional efforts show no signs of slowing down. Both Legendary and Paramount recognize that the franchise thrives on its iconic characters, and they have embraced this in their marketing strategy.
Andrew Koji’s portrayal of Ryu has quickly become a fan favorite, with early feedback praising his costume for capturing the character’s essence. The classic white gi, red gloves, and headband have defined Ryu since the original games, making him a natural choice for the latest promotional artwork.
A newly released poster features Koji’s Ryu conjuring a glowing blue energy sphere between his hands, a clear homage to Ryu’s signature Hadoken attack. The poster also includes a “Filmed for IMAX” label, emphasizing that many of the film’s most intense fight scenes were shot specifically for the large-format experience ahead of its October 16 release. This poster is part of the studio’s ongoing IMAX campaign.

Reactions to the poster have been varied but mostly positive. Some fans have humorously noted the heavy digital enhancement, suggesting that Koji resembles his video game counterpart more than a live-action actor. Others have focused on the significance of the image, viewing it as confirmation that the film is honoring its most iconic elements rather than drastically altering them.
This commitment to authenticity extended beyond the promotional art. Koji and co-star Noah Centineo, who portrays Ken Masters, reportedly underwent six weeks of rigorous training to ensure their on-screen fighting feels authentic and grounded in real techniques, rather than relying solely on choreography or visual effects.
The film follows Ryu and Ken, estranged former training partners, who reunite in 1993 when Chun-Li recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament, a competition secretly orchestrated by the crime lord M. Bison and his Shadaloo organization. Director Kitao Sakurai, who co-wrote the script with T.J. Fixman, has assembled a diverse cast that includes Jason Momoa as Blanka, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog.

Previous character posters sparked discussions about costume accuracy, with some designs, like Momoa’s Blanka and Jackson’s Balrog, facing more scrutiny from longtime fans. In contrast, Koji’s Ryu has largely been seen as a faithful adaptation, earning him praise from the community.
With the film’s release just weeks away, the studio’s decision to highlight Ryu once more in this new poster indicates their confidence as they approach the premiere. For a franchise adaptation that has worked hard to win over a discerning fanbase, showcasing the character that fans feel has been done right is a strategic move before ‘Street Fighter’ officially hits theaters.
